  • EPISTLE II Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4

B rethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against meit was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we

lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I

made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to

make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I

might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you,

that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of

heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I

    have for you.

    GOSPEL Matthew 22:2-14

T he Lord said this parable, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the mar-riage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are

invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and eve-

rything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' But they made light of it and went off, one to his

farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and

killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and

burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were

not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you

find.' And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad

and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to look at the

guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, 'Friend, how did

you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the

attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep

and gnash their teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."

    RESPECT FOR THE HOLY EUCHARIST

It is difficult to prepare children for Liturgy. But there is no excuse for missing Liturgy entirely and expecting to receive Communion. You will not be communed outside of Liturgy unless you are old, in-firm or have experienced an emergency. Saying it was hard get-ting the kids ready today will not suffice. Teaching children to be on time - and thus show respect for - the Eucharist should be our top priority.

Resurrectional Apolytikion Let us worship the Word who is unoriginate with the Father and the Spirit, and from a Virgin was born for our salvation, O believ-ers, and let us sing His praise. For in His goodness He was pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, and to undergo death, and to raise up those who had died, by His glori-ous Resurrection. For the Archangel Chief Commander of the heavenly armies, we the unworthy ones entreat you in earnest, that you might with your supplications forti-fy us, guarding us who run to you and be-neath the protection of the pinions of your immaterial glory, and who with fervor shout: Deliver us, from every danger, as Captain of the hosts on high. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas

As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness,

and teacher of temperance you were exhibited

to your flock, by the truth of the evidence,

Thus you acquired the lofty through humility,

abundance through poverty. Father and Hier-

arch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God,

that our souls may be saved.

Kontakion Both Joachim and Anna from their sterility's stigma, and Adam and Eve from their mor-tality's ruin have been set free, O immaculate Maid, by your holy nativity. For this do your people hold celebration, redeemed from the guilt of transgression as they cry to you, "The barren one bears the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life."

    NATIVITY OF THE THEOTOKOS

The birth and early life of the Virgin

Mary is not recorded in the Gospels or

other books of the New Testament, how-

ever this information can be found in a

work dating from the second century

known as the Book of James or Protevan-

gelion. According to the story found in

this book, Mary's parents, Joachim and

Anna, were childless for many years.

They remained faithful to God, but their

prayers for a child were unanswered. One

day, when Joachim came to the temple to

make an offering, he was turned away by

the High Priest who chastised him for his

lack of children. To hide his shame, Joa-

chim retreated to the hill country to live

among the shepherds and their flocks. As

Joachim was praying, his wife Anna was

praying at the same time at their house in

Jerusalem. An angel appeared to both of

them and announced that Anna would

have a child whose name would be

known throughout the world. Anna prom-

ised to offer her child as a gift to the

Lord. Joachim returned home, and in due

time Anna bore a daughter, Mary.
