ΛΑΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΟ ΜΟΥΣΕΙΟ

FOLKLORIC MUSEUM

Στιγμιότυπα από την επίσκεψη στο ιδιωτικό λαογραφικό μουσείου του κ. Δημήτρη Λουράντου στην Χώρα, από Φίλους του Σωματείου μας.

Για πάνω από τρεις δεκαετίες, ο κ. Λουράντος έχει συγκεντρώσει μια πολύ

αξιόλογη συλλογή Κυθηραϊκών αντικειμένων π.χ. αγροτικά εργαλεία, έπιπλα,

σερβίτσια, υφαντά και έντυπα του παλιού Κυθηραϊκού τύπου. Αρκετά από

αυτά ήταν οικογενειακά κειμήλια και άλλα από δωρεές. Πολλά όμως έχει

συλλέξει ο ίδιος από διάφορους σκουπιδότοπους του νησιού μας. Ο χώρος

πού στεγάζεται η σημερινή έκθεση είναι πάρα πολύ μικρός και όπως ο ίδιος ο κ.

Λουράντος ομολογεί, στενοχωριέται διότι μοιάζει πιο πολύ με αποθήκη παρά

με έκθεση. Ελπίζουμε πως σύντομα θα βρεθεί και θα παραχωρηθεί από τον

Δήμο ένα κατάλληλο κτήριο για να στεγαστεί αυτή η θαυμάσια συλλογή που

απεικονίζει την ιστορία, την κουλτούρα και την οικογενειακή ζωή των προγόνωνμας. Στο κ. Λουράντο αξίζουν συγχαρητήρια γι’ αυτό το αξιόλογο έργο.

Η Φίλοι πέρασαν ένα πολύ ενημερωτικό πρωινό και από κει συνέχισαν με μια επίσκεψη στην εκκλησία του Αγίου

Νικόλαου πριν κατηφορίσουνε για φαγητό στην όμορφη παραλία του Καψαλιού.

Photographic memories from the Friends of Museums visit to the private folkloric museum of Mr. Dimitris Lourandos in

Hora. For over three decades, retired school teacher Mr. Lourandos has collected an incredible array of Kytherian

objects and items e.g. agricultural implements, furniture, crockery and

pottery, textiles and old reading material. Many of these were family

possessions, others were donated but many were collected from various

rubbish tips around the island. The area in which the collection is housed

today is far too small and as Mr. Lourandos himself confesses, he feels that it

is more of a storeroom than a museum.

We call upon Kythera’s Municipal Council to make available one of the many council-owned buildings in order to house

this very valuable collection which depicts the family life, culture and history of Kythera over the last two centuries.

After a very informative and enjoyable morning and enroute for lunch by the beach, our group stopped by the church of

Agios Nikolaos near the camping site above Kapsali to admire the lovely church and of course the stunning views.

Μια υπέροχη ανοιξιάτικη ημέρα μας περίμενε για να περπατήσουμε στα καταπράσινα χωράφια των Βιαράδικων

σπαρμένα με τάπητες από κατακόκκινες παπαρούνες. Η ομάδα μας που όλο και αυξάνεται, ενθουσιάστηκε όχι μόνο

με την φύση αλλά και ερευνώντας τις πέτρες και τα τοιχία για αρχαιολογικά σημάδια.

Ο κος Αλέκος Καστρίσιος γνώστης της περιοχής και ο ίδιος ερασιτέχνης ερευνητής μας αποκάλυψε μυστικά που

πρόσφατα έγιναν γνωστά στην Αρχαιολογική Υπηρεσία. Αναμένουμε νέες εκπλήξεις στην περιοχή. Η ευχάριστη

παρέα, μη θέλοντας να τελειώσει απότομα αυτό το πρωινό, συνέχισε προς Σκάνδια και Αυλέμονα και όπως

καταλαβαίνετε, σε άλλες εξερευνήσεις…..

A glorious spring day awaited us for our morning walk through the green fields strewn with bright red poppies at

Viaradika. Our growing group of friends was enthused not only by the nature surrounding us but also by our pursuit for

signs of archaeological interest along the dry stone walls. Mr. Alekos Castrissios who knows the area very well and whois a passionate amateur explorer recently disclosed his finds to the Ministry of Culture. Νew developments in the area

are anticipated in the not too distant future.

After our pleasant excursion, most of the group, not wanting the day to finish so early continued on to Scandia and

Avlemonas until late in the evening.

ΙΟΥΛΙΟΣ 2015

H ΛΑΓΚΑΔΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΚΑΡΑΒΑ

Στης 20 Ιουλίου 2015, πραγματοποιήθηκε μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα εκδρομή στης δροσερές και καταπράσινες πηγές

του Καραβά – ιδανική βόλτα για καυτές καλοκαιρινές ημέρες.

Οι καλεσμένοι μας ήσαν οι αρχαιολόγοι καθηγητές Timothy Gregory και Λίτα Τζωρτζοπούλου –Gregory οι οποίοι έχουν

κάνει και συνεχίζουν να κάνουν ειδική μελέτη και έρευνα για την χρήση και διαφύλαξη των νερών στο βόρειο τμήμα

του νησιού η οποία καλύπτει όλες τις εποχές. Μας αποκάλυψαν ιστορικά μυστικά της ρεματιάς και μας έδειξαν τους

παλιούς νερόμυλους κάποιοι από τους οποίους είναι κρυμμένοι πίσω από πυκνή βλάστηση. Η πηγή Κεραμάρι έγινε

αμφιθέατρο. Ο Καθηγητής από το Ohio University μαζί με την σύζυγό του (εκπρόσωπος του Αυστραλιανού

Αρχαιολογικού Ινστιτούτου στην Αθήνα) κατατόπισαν τους παρευρισκόμενους πάνω στο θέμα με τη χρήση

μαυροπίνακα στην πλατεία της πηγής.

Μέσα στα πλαίσια του «μαθήματος», η μεγάλη ομάδα συνέχισε προς τον

Αμιρ-Αλί και την πασίγνωστη πηγή «Πορτοκαλιά» για ένα παραδοσιακό

κολατσιό – κρυστάλλινο νερό από την πηγή, παξιμαδάκι και τσίπουρο

βεβαίως.

Λίγο πιο πέρα από το σημείο της «Πορτοκαλιάς» (της πηγής) υπήρχε

κάποτε μια τεράστια πορτοκαλιά που κάθε χρόνο έβγαζε 30,000

πορτοκάλια και τα οποία έφευγαν για τον Πειραιά με τα καΐκια της

εποχής. Λέγεται ότι για να αγκαλιαστεί η πορτοκαλιά χρειαζόντουσαν

πέντε άτομα με απλωμένα τα χέρια. Η φήμη του δέντρου ήταν τέτοια που

δημιουργήθηκε το παραδοσιακό τραγούδι «Πορτοκαλιά του Καραβά», καιτο οποίο ταξίδεψε και υιοθετήθηκε από τους Καραβιώτες του Καραβά της

Κύπρου. Στης αρχές το 20ου αιώνα, μια μεγάλη πλημμύρα ξερίζωσε το

δέντρο και έμεινε πια μόνο στην ιστορία.

ΤΗΕ GULLY OF KARAVA

On the 20th

July 2015, a large number of Members and friends enjoyed a refreshing walk down to the Keramari spring

of Karavas – an appropriate venue for such a hot summer’s day.

Our guests for the afternoon were archaeologists, Prof. Timothy Gregory and

his wife Dr. Lita Tzortzopoulou- Gregory. Since 2011, they have been

carrying out a study of human use of water resources in northern Kythera, a

project sponsored by the Ohio State University in conjunction with theAustralian Archaeological Institute in Athens. Their earlier studies focused

primarily on features such as water mills and irrigation channels within the

area but the project is now widening to “include engineering based studies of

strategies for maximization of generation of power and the re-utilization of

water for different purposes…”

For further “enlightening” purposes, the

group continued down to the springs of Amir

Ali and enroute to the spring of Portokalia, we

were able to examine an old water mill

recently exposed from the heavy vegetation

which had engulfed it. In accordance with

local tradition, once at the spring with its

crystal clear drinking water, out came the paximadia, nibbles and tsipouro. A lovely finale to the afternoon.

Once upon a time, a few metres from the spring of Portokalia, there

stood an enormous orange tree. This orange tree reputedly

produced 30,000 oranges each season which were loaded onto the

local caiques and shipped to the Piraeus markets. It took 5 people

with outstretched arms to go around the girth of the tree. Such was

the fame of the tree that the popular Kytherian folk song “Portokalia

tou Karava” (Orange Tree of Karavas) was created. The words and

music reached the shores of Cyprus where the Karaviotes of Karavas

also adopted the song as their own.

The sad end of the story however comes around the turn of the 19th-

20th century when a heavy flash flood hit the gully of Karava and

uprooted this legendary tree.

Στην παρέα μας είχαμε επίσης φοιτητές αρχαιολογίας από το

Οhio State University οι οποίοι βρισκόντουσαν στα Κύθηρα

στα πλαίσια του «Κaravas Water Project”.

Ευχαριστούμε θερμά το κ. Παναγιώτη Καλλίγερο ο οποίος μας

ξενάγησε στον χώρο.

Μετέπειτα αρκετά άτομα κατέβηκαν στην έκθεση του

ζωγράφου και φίλου μας Γεωργίου Τζάννε στο Ζeidoros Art

Space στο Καψάλι.

AGIOS YIANNIS STO KRIMNO - (ST. JOHN ON THE CLIFF FACE)

Our group of Friends and many other guests met at the foot of this impressive Kytherian monument andclimbed over 100 steps to reach the church in the cavern where it is said that Saint John the Theologian

having being banished from Rome stayed there for some time. It was here that he apparently had the

inspiration for the Apocalypse. However, in the 17th

century there appeared to be two churches, one for

St. John the Theologian and the other further down the cliff dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Raids by

barbarians destroyed the monument but in the 18th

century this place of worship was restored in the

name of John the Baptist which has prevailed until today.

Despite the heat of the afternoon and the steep climb,

we were amply rewarded not only with the spectacular

views but also the interior of the cavern. We must

thank Mr. Panagiotis Kalligeros for his guidance.

We were delighted to have amongst us a team of

archaeological students from Ohio State University

who were working on the “Karavas Water Project”.

A number of people continued down to Kapsali to view

the exhibition “ARTIFACTS” by artist and Friend Mr.

George Tzannes.
