    SUNDAY OF MATTHEW (James 5, 10-20) 20

    th

    July 2014

The Prophet Elijah was a great Prophet, he was the greatest of the prophets of the

Old Testament. He is considered even greater than the Prophet Isaiah, who was

also known the fifth Evangelist. And yet this prophet did not even write a single

prophecy, not even one word. Others wrote about him. His life and the things that he

did were themselves a prophecy. The way in which he lived and worked; the way

that he left this world and entered Heaven; the fact that he was present at the

Transfiguration of our Lord; all show how great he was. In the Old Testament much

was written about the Prophet Elijah. Mount Carmel and the miraculous sacrifice,

injustices and crimes. Spurred on by her, he abandoned the worship of the true God

and worshiped idols. The worship of the true God was persecuted. Both the rulers

and simple people of this kingdom worshiped a false god, Baal, Zeus of the ancient

Greeks. During these difficult times and amongst the widespread disobedience the

prophet Elijah appeared, or rather God revealed him. At one time the Prophet

suddenly appeared before King Ahab. His gaze was like lightning and his voice like

thunder. King- he says- whether the God of Israel sends rain or not, depends on my

word, on what I say. I will decide when the destruction comes, I will decide the end

says the Lord. This will happen when I see the cup of sin filled. God can wait. God

is Patience and tolerance, but do not confuse patience, kindness and goodness with

weakness. The wrath of God will descend on the children of the disobedience.

Beloved brothers and sisters, that which God said to the Israelites also applies to us.

Prophet Elijah said those words to Ahab, so that he and his people would repent, but

they did not repent of their sins. Today we are in a similar situation as those of

Northern Israel when it comes to idolatry, infidelity, and distancing ourselves from

the true God. Our home country that produced so many Saints who upheld,

supported and spread the Orthodox faith to other nations has now become

unrecognisable. Her face has changed, heresy prevails, as does idolatry and the

worship of the Gods of Olympus has re-emerged. Christians have lost their vitality

and courage, that were their main characteristics of the past age. Enthusiasm and

the confession of our faith is missing. We move away from our Christianity and

declined spiritually. These days are critical for us and for all people, because the

    days are evil

(Eph. 5, 16). Difficult times are ahead of us, things that have not and

could not even be imagined that could exist will take place. The Prophet Elijah

conveyed the message of heaven, which like a thunderbolt struck the king and all of

the people: King, because you have remained unrepentant of your many sins, you

cannot be corrected your body will be washed in the bathes of the prostitutes and

the swine will drink your blood. And you, wicked queen, the hooves of horses will

  • 8/10/2019 1513 2014

    8/16

    8

trample your body and dogs will eat your flesh. And all you women who adorn

yourselves in expensive silks and laces, in obscene and provocative dresses with

gold belts around your waist, you will be dressed in rags and instead of gold belts

there will be a rope tight around your waist, leading you barefoot into captivity.

Terrible words. He said this and then left the presence of the king. Then the trials

started for the kingdom of the north. Apocalyptic events did not occur, but rather the

suffering that the Prophet described. At this point we need to say that all of the

things he said occurred, the king was seriously injured in battle and his soldiers

carried him to a spring to wash his body, the spring where prostitutes washed

themselves. The blood of Ahab flowed into the river where the swine drank. Queen

Jezebel was thrown from the window of the palace when it was captured, her body

landed on the ground below and was then tramples by horses. By the time the

people went to see what had happened they found just her bones, because the dogs

has eaten her flesh. Shortly afterwards the Assyrians and then the Babylonians

raided the country and captured the people and put them into slavery. When we do

not believe, we do not understand when we hear these things, we will only

understand when the time comes and they occur.

And this is also the case in so many other things. We dont believe in the coming

judgment at the fearful judgement seat of God. We do not accept the resurrection of

the dead. However, in the end all of these things will happen, we will gnash our

teeth and bang our heads and say that we were told the truth but we did not want to

understand. Everything will occur, all will come to pass and we will lament our great

error, that we did not believe the things that our Church tells us.

    Baptism

Mr Anthony and Mrs Emilia Saad baptised their son in our Church on Saturday

afternoon 12 July 2014. Mr Theodoros Pezos the God-Father gave the newly

baptised boy the name Ioannis. We congratulate the parents and God-parent

and pray that our Lord enlightens them so that they can guide young Ioannis

    according to His will.

Visit by the Greek Orthodox Christian Society

Great joy and spiritual benefit were experienced by all those who were present

at the enlightened talks presented by the members of the Greek Orthodox

Christian Society last weekend. All in all, there were 10 talks given at various

parishes of our Holy Archdiocese here in Adelaide. 3 talks were given here at

Prophet Elias Norwood, 2 at the Parish of Sts Raphael, Nicholas and Irene, 2

at The Nativity of Christ Port Adelaide, 1 at St Spyridon and 2 at St Nektarios.

Of course, these talks were well advertised, yet the small number of

attendances by both youth and adults is yet again an indication that

unfortunately people do not show much interest in spiritual talks and

presentations. The group of about 50 members of the Greek Orthodox Society

comprised doctors, dentists, lawyers, university students and lay preachers of

our Holy Archdiocese. We thank and congratulate all those who took part inthese presentations, talks, plays, Christian and patriotic songs and we pray

that everyone can incorporate all these in their daily lives. We only wish to

have similar people here in South Australia so that we too can go out and

conduct internal missionary work in other parts of Australia.

    Christianity and Helenism

The theme Christianity and Hellenism, which was successfully presented to

us by the solicitor Mr Ulysses Coustas, genuinely created an atmosphere of

reflection. The presentation made references to older times where the term

Christian gave honor and respect to people in the time where the Greek

person would fill their fellow people with patriotic pride. In these times, the

power of faith and homeland would be solidly embedded in peoples hearts

and these people would sacrifice themselves for these two things faith and

homeland. Mr Coustas left us with 2 questions: Are we Christian Orthodox?

Are we Hellenes? Whilst the answer to both of these might be a verbal yes,

what is it in reality? We would like our parishioners to take some time and

    discuss.

    References of Prophet Elias miracles

Prophet Elijah was from Thesvi, a city beyond Jordan, so he was called

Thesvitis. He prophesied during the reign of King Ahab, who reigned in 873-

854 BC. Ahab and his wife Jezebel were evil people and were seaking to find

and kill Prophet Elijah. Jezebel - who was not from Israel - imposed idolatry on

the people by force. Why was Jezebel after Prophet Elijah? Because Elijah

was telling the truth. Jezebel hated Prophet Elijah like Herodias hated John the

Baptist. In both cases, we see that people in authority who have learned to live

in a world of lies hate the truth. First big point, displayed by Prophet Elijah, was

when he prayed and it did not rain for three and a half years. At that time, the

Prophet was hiding in a cave in a torrent close to Jordan. There was some

water, and a crow was feeding him every morning. The second point Prophet

Elijah showed was when, at God's command, he went to Zarephath of Sidon.

There he was offered hospitality by a widow, who had a little flour and a little

oil. When Elijah ate the only little pie, he blessed the empty oil pot and the

empty flour-bag; and thereafter, the widow never ran out of oil or flour. Third

point was when the widows only child fell sick and died. The Prophet prayed

and resurrected the child. Fourth great sign shown by Prophet Elijah was when

he came and prayed so that fire would come down from the sky. With a shout,

King Ahab gathered four hundred pagan pseudo-priests, who were employed

by Jezebel. Then the Prophet Elijah challenged them to a contest. He told

them to put on the altar wood and the animal for sacrifice, and the pseudo-

priest started running around and screaming all day begging the false god

Baal, to bring fire And there was not voice and there was not audition. Then

the Prophet said to them Now I will offer my sacrifice. He made his altar, and

  • 8/10/2019 1513 2014

    16/16

    16

three times poured water over the wood and then prayed. Fire fell from heaven

and burned the entire altar. At that point, the people caught all four hundred

pseudo-priests, and Prophet Elijah slaughtered every one as was agreed.

Jezebel, enraged, chased the Prophet, and he went high up on Horeb, where

five hundred years before, Moses heard the voice of God and saw the bush on

fire, yet not consumed. There, the prophet Elijah hid in a cave, and God taught

him a great lesson: stand on the mountain before the Lord; and behold, the

Lord will pass bythere will be a great and powerful wind an earthquake

after the earthquake, there will be a fire, but the Lord will not be in the fire.

After the fire, there will be a sound of a gentle breeze, and the Lord will be

there. The Prophet Elijah was a man who was burning with divine zeal his

entire life. He ascended into the sky on a fiery chariot. Dear brethren, Elijah

lives. He lives, and woe to the current pseudo-priests and pseudo- bishops,

and all those evil people who are mocking the true God. Surely the prophet

Elijah would not let them go unpunished.
