The capacitor is formed by two disks, charged with opposite electrical load, mounted on the sensing face to project the electric field to sensor´s outside, thus creating a capacitor which has the air as the dielectric. As the sensor oscillator is controlled by the front capacitor, when some material is approached, their capacitance also changes, bringing out a change in the oscillator circuit. This variation is converted into a continuous signal, which compared with a standard value, pass to activate on the output stage. 2.2 - Sensing Face: This is the surface where the electrical field emerges. 2.3 - Nominal Sensing Distance (Rated Sn): This is the theorical sensing distance, which uses a standard target as activator and it does not consider variations caused by industrialization, environment temperature and supply voltage. This is distance where the sensors are specified. 2.5 - Hysteresis: The difference between activating point (when the metallic target approaches of the sensing face) and de-activating point (when move the target away). It is important because guarantee a difference between the switching points avoiding that during a possible sensor vibration or activating, the output signal be oscillated. 2.4 - Embedded:This sensor type haselectromagnetic field emergingonly on the sensing face andallows that be mounted in themetallic surface.

2.4.1 - Not Embedded:In this case the electromagneticfield emerges also of the sensingface side surface, sensitive withthe metal presence around it.

2.6 - Standard Target:The sensing distances in the capacitive sensors are specified to themetallic activator made of steel SAE 1020 square grounded and withthe side equal the 3 times of the sensing distance for the notembedded models (the great majority) and in some few cases ofembedded capacitive sensors uses the square side as the same sizeof the sensor diameter.

2.7 - Effective Sensing Distance (Sr):Value influenced by the industrialization, specified for environmenttemperature (23oC) and nominal supply voltage:

Sr = ± 10% Sn

2.8 - Usable Sensing Distance (Su):It was gotten to a determined sensor considering the tolerances of theindustrialization:

Su = ± 20% Sr

2.9 - Assured Sensing Distance (Sa):It is the sensing distance that can operate, considering all thevariations of the industrialization , temperature and operation voltage:

Sa ≤ 72% Sn

2.10 - Sensing Distance x Detected Material:The capacitive sensor shows still a sensing distance reduction assured according with the material dielectric to be detected, that influencedirectly the sensor front capacitor.

3 - Sensitivity Adjuster:The sensitivity adjuster is mainly to reduce the activator influence,caused by materials near of the sensor sensitivity area, decreasing itssensing distance.

It still allows detected some material inside others, for instance: liquidsinsides of bottle or plastics tubes, reservoirs with glass view finders,powders inside of packing.

The capacitive sensors have sensitivity adjuster that must be operatedwith a correct screwdriver.

Take care! The sensitivity adjuster of the sensor must be realizedcarefully and do not turn the potentiometer in false, it will can damagepermanently the sensor.

Note 1: In the not embedded sensor installation verify if there areobjects next to the sensor sensitivity area that could activate it.

Note 2: The level detection with capacitive sensor on glass viewfinders (thickness up to 5mm for sensor M30) must be previouslytested and the controlled product must not adhere or deposit layers onthe glass.

Note 3: The sensor when detecting level on view finders must stay thenearest or even though leaned on view finder to get the biggestsensing distance.

3.1 - Adjuste Proceeding of the Capacitive Sensor:• Mount the sensor on the brackets (lean the sensor on the view

finder to level detection),

• Verify if there is not any support part near of the sensor that couldcause the sensor activating constantly;

• Power the sensor according to its connections diagram;

• Without the product to be detected, the sensor must stayde-activated, then turn the potentiometer on clockwise side until thatturn led on and soon after reduce the sensitivity until turn led off;

• Add a safe margin decreasing a little of sensitivity;

• Put the product to be detected and verify the sensor activating;

• Remove the product again verifying the output de-activating;

• Repeat the two previous proceeding verifying the detection stability,in case of sensor stays activated after the product removed,decrease a little of sensitivity and always repeat the test again.

• In case of the detection does not be stable, use other sensor withbigger sensing distance.

4 - Electrical Configuration Types:

4.1 - What is the NPN sensor?They are sensors with a transistor in the output stage that has thefunction of to switch (on/off) the supply negative terminal.

4.2 - What is the PNP sensor?They are sensors with a transistor in the output stage that has thefunction of to switch (on/off) the supply positive terminal.

4.3 - What is the Namur sensor?Applied typically in hazardous areas of the chemical industries orsimilar with intrinsically safe barriers.The Namur sensor consumes a current ≥3mA when powered, and with the target approaching the consumption current decrease below of1mA, when powered by a 8V circuit and 1KΩ impedance.

4.4 - What is DC 2 Wires Sensor?Similar of the mechanical end-course, the sensors are connected inseries with the load. Observe that a small current flows through theload when the sensor is de-activated and required to the powered ofthe internal circuit. Verify the correct load activation considering thatthere is still a small voltage drop over the sensor.

4.5 - AC / DC Sensor:

2 wires sensors multivoltage that operate in the 20 to 250V range andwith DC or AC voltage.Note: Sensors with 4 pins V1 connector have not grounding pin.

4.6 - Sensors with 3 Pins V13 Connector:

All 2 wires sensors with V13connector in AC/DC (UA and UFmodels) have the groundingterminal in the pin 1.

5 - Special Cares:

5.1 - Connection Cable:To avoid that the sensorsconnection cable be submitted ofthe any kind of mechanical effort.

5.2 - Vibration:The sensors body isencapsulated with resin making itapplicable for use on equipmentthat is moving. Ensure that thecable is securely fastened at both ends. Do not allow the cable toflex where it enters the sensorbody, this can cause damage tothe cable and premature failure of the sensor.

5.3 - Mounting Bracket:To avoid that the sensor suffersimpacts with other parts or pieces that are not used as support.

5.4 - Moving Parts:During the sensor initial setup,ensure that there is sufficientclearance between the sensorand the target, avoiding damageby an impact with the activator.

5.5 - Tightening Torque:Do not exceed the recommendedtightening torque when mounting thesensor.

5.6 - Chemical Resistance:When using the sensor in hazardouschemical area, ensure that the sensor will not react with the chemical. If necessaryselecting an appropriate sensor for itsapplication.

5.7 - Enviromental Conditions:Avoid using the sensor inenvironmental conditions where theenvironmental temperature exceedsthe operating temperature specified.

5.8 - Inductive Loads:Using the sensor to activatehigh inductive loads, it candamage permanently thesensor output section, besidesof to generate the high voltagespikes in the supply.

5.9 - Cabling:According to the proceduresrecommendation, must avoidthat the sensors cables andinstruments of control andmeasure use the sameconduit than activatingcircuits.Note: Even though there arefilters against noise in thesensors, in case of sensor or power supply cables use thesame conduits than enginepower circuits, electricbreaks, solenoids, etc; theinduced voltage can damage the sensor.Note: for complete information about the loads of the DC and ACsensors, please see the instruction manual:DC sensors – LoadsAC sensors – Loads
