The 10th InternationalHydrogeologicalCongress takesplace inThessaloniki,8-10October2014. It hasbeenco-organizedby theHellenicCommitteeofHydrogeology and Cyprus Geologists andMining Engineers. The organizationofthehydrogeologicalconferenceeverythreeyears(previouslyeverytwo)istheleadingeventoftheHellenicCommitteeofHydrogeology(HellenicChapterofIAH).HydrogeologicalConferencesprovideagreatopportunityforthedisseminationofnewknowledgeinthefieldsofHydrogeologyandotherwatersciences.

ThessalonikihostsforsecondtimetheHydrogeologicalCongress(thefirstin1997,Emeritus ProfessorG. Soulioswas the president of theOrg.Committee).OvertheyearsmanyhydrogeologistsoftheHellenicCommitteeofHydrogeologyhavecontributedtotheinternationalizationoftheCongress(thefirstconferenceswerepurelyPan-Hellenic)andtheenlargementofthetopicsoftheConference,followingthemoderntrendsinHydrogeology.

Hydrogeologyhasmadegreatprogressinrecentyearsandisinatransitionalperiod:fromthediscoveryofnewwaterresourcesandtheefficientexploitationtowardsamoreenvironmentalmanagementnecessaryfortheconservationofhumanlifeandotherlivingorganisms.

Atotalnumberof101papersof277authorsarepublishedintheProceedingsoftheConferencebytheHellenicCommitteeofHydrogeology.BeyondtheGreekauthors,foreigncolleaguesattendtheconferencefrom16countries.Morethan25%oftheparticipantsareMasterandPhDstudents in relevantdisciplines.ThesestatisticsindicatetheincreasinginternationalandeducativecharacteroftheConference.

heProceedingsincludetwo(2)volumeswithmorethan1000pages.Issuessuchas groundwatermanagement, coastal aquifers, karstic aquifers, hydrochemistry,applicationofnewtechnologies(remotesensing,isotopeanalysis)inHydrogeology,vulnerabilityassessment,impactsofclimatechangeonwaterresources,modelingandgeothermalenergyarepresentedintheseProceedings.WeremarkthatthisConferencefocusparticularlyongroundwateranddependentecosystems.

It is pointed out that the Conference has been prepared and carried out in anunprecedentedeconomiccrisiswhichweallexperience.Soemphasiswasgiveninthescientificpartoftheconference,lessinother"luxuries".

Abstract The thermal springs of Ikaria Island, located in the Eastern Aegean, namely Thermo Lefkadas, Asklipios Ag. Kirikos, Apollon, Kratsa and Spilaio in Therma and Agia Kyriaki, are famous for their high radon radioactivity content. The area belongs to the Attico-cycladic isopic zone, consisting on the island of a Paleozoic sequence of gneisses and marbles, called the Ikaria unit, overlaid by a Mesozoic sequence of marbles in alternation with schists and phyllites, as well as limestones and dolomites. The Tertiary deposits that overlay the bedrock, consists of a mo-lassic ophiolitic formation, marine deposits and a granitic intrusion in gneisses, overlaid by
