Headquarters of the Supreme Lodge January, 2010PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

As we welcome 2010, we also welcome the newlyelected and re-elected chapter officers. It has beensaid that:

“Promises made today are commitmentsfor the future.”

As our officers take their oath of office, each prom-ises to uphold the laws, rules and mandates of thePan Icarian Brotherhood making a commitment forthe future. However, officers alone cannot accom-plish our goals, we need the support of our members.Only by stressing the work of the Pan Icarian Broth-erhood and the Pan Icarian Foundation, will we beable to encourage our family and friends of Icarianheritage to sign up as members.

Since my last report in October, the Supreme Lodgeheld their meetings in Hollywood, California (Octo-ber 2009) and in Clearwater, Florida during theweekend of January 16, 2010. Included in thebusiness agenda of our latest meeting was the im-provement of our pan-icarian.com website; theIcarian cookbook and the upcoming conventions inDetroit, 2010, and in California, 2011. HeliosChapter #19 also hosted the Icarian Youth Leader-ship Conference, which was well attended. Theconference proved successful thanks to the co-chairs, Diana Plutis and Stephanie Tseperkas alongwith national youth leadership chair, CathyPandeladis.

By mid November, I was able to visit twenty (20) ofour twenty-seven (27) chapters. The remainingseven (7) should be visited in the next severalmonths. I ask that the chapters continue to workwith their liaison officer of the Supreme Lodge inorder to keep your members up to date with thelatest Icarian news.

In closing, as we commit to protect, preserve andpromote our Icarian heritage, join us in helping ourorganization grow. Should you have relatives orfriends that qualify for membership, but may residein areas that we do not have established chapters, please feel free to forward me their names andcontact information.

Best wishes for the New Year and thank you foryour support,

Sonja B. Stefanadis, SP

CHAPTER #19 HELIOS

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA

PAN ICARIAN BROTHERHOOD OF AMERICA “ICAROS”YOUTH COMMITTEE MEETING REPORT

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEYouth

The 6th annual youth leadership conference was heldJanuary 15-17th in Clearwater, Florida. The weekend wasattended by youth from various chapters throughout theBrotherhood. I would like to thank Chapter Helios fortheir hospitality and especially Diana Plutis andStephanie Tseperkas for planning the weekend.

Among items discussed were developing and producinga puzzle of Ikaria to sell. Proceeds would be used to helpfund the youth conference in the future. We hope to havethis ready to go at the Detroit convention. We alsodiscussed ways to increase communication and involve-ment and other fund raising ideas.

Suggestions were made to not have the youth confer-ence and convention in the same year in the same city, tohave the chapter send different delegates each year and tohave people adhere to the deadlines which will make iteasier for the host chapter to plan the weekend. We arelooking for a chapter to host next years event. If a chapteris interested please let us know at the convention.

The weekend started off on Friday night with thedelegate arrivals and a meet and greet at the Wavenightclub (picutred right). The next morning, we enjoyedan Ikarian cooking demonstration by Nick Plutis and TomTsakalos with help from Pete Gemelas followed by somelively rounds of Ikarian Jeopardy. We ended the weekendattending Chapter Helios' dinner dance where we dancedto the violi of Peter Karnavas until 2 am. We will bemeeting again in Detroit at the convention and all youthages 18-30 are welcome to attend.

Respectfully submitted, Cathy Pandeladis, Youth Chairperson

All delegates were asked to write an written piece on theimportance of the 2012 celebration. See pg 66 for some of the

youth delegate submissions.

I would like to open my report by first thanking all thoseindividuals past and present who have generously sup-ported the Pan Icarian Scholarship program and havemade this the largest and most successful program of itskind anywhere in the Greek community. It is gratifying to see the bright, talented and focusedpeople that we have in our community who apply forthese scholarships. The applicants cut a wide crosssection in terms of their fields of study (medicine, law, engineering, business, education, music, art), their agesand their personal economic situations. In looking at our Supreme Lodge, District Governors andthe boards of the individual chapters, we have a growinglist of scholarship alumni who currently hold variouspositions in the Pan Icarian Brotherhood. I would alsolike to point out that I encounter no shortage of pastscholarship recipients at the annual conventions; themajority of whom appear to have made the most of theopportunity that access to higher education has giventhem.Factors taken into account in reviewing applicantssubmittals are their GPA, what year they are currentlyenrolled in (Freshman, Sophomore, etc...), the University/ College they are attending, the type of program they arein (Pre Med, Engineering, Business, etc…), if they havepreviously received a scholarship from the Foundation, their letter(s) of recommendation and last but not leasttheir level and length of involvement in the Pan IcarianBrotherhood. It has become a concern of mine that suddenly people outthere have discovered or re-discovered their “Inner

Ikarioti” and are applying for scholarships. It is alwaysappreciated by the committee when the letters from anindividual’s local chapter to verify that they are membersin good standing include a few sentences with regard tothe level of involvement of the individuals and or theindividual’s family in the chapter over the years.Going forward, applicants are now required to include allthe elements of their submittal (application, sealedtranscript, sealed letter(s) of recommendation, letter ofgood standing with your chapter, etc…) in a SINGLEENVELOPE THAT IS TO BE MAILED AND THUSPOSTMARKED.Fed Ex, UPS or any other similar type of shipper is alsoacceptable as these services also provide trackingwhereby the date the submittal is sent can be verified.Transcripts and letters of recommendation must be sealedand included in a student’s submittal; in other words e-mailed transcripts or letters of recommendation or thosethat are not in sealed envelopes are not acceptable andwill invalidate an application.Furthermore letters of recommendation must be writtenby someone such as a professor, teacher, or guidancecounselor; in other words someone relevant to thestudent’s current educational institution. In the past wehave received letters of recommendation from parishpriests, employers and other individuals not a part of anapplicant’s educational institution; while these are all finepeople they are not considered material as far as attestingto the applicant’s academic accomplishments or commit-ment with regard to their education.

MONTREAL #22ikaros of montrealGreetings from Ikaros of Montreal, Chapter 22!We hope that you were all able to spend a memorableChristmas holiday celebrating with your families andloved ones and we truly wish that the New Year of 2010is filled with an abundance of peace, happiness, love andhealth for all of you. Although for this issue we did nothave much Chapter news to report we hope that in thefuture months we will be able to update you on new andupcoming Chapter events that we plan to organize.

On a very happy note we were ecstatic to celebrate onOctober the 10th, 2009 the holy matrimony of JohnSpiropoulos and sweet Nancy Antypas (loving daughterof Miltiadis and FrossoAntypas). The beautifulbride as well as herhandsome groombeamed with joy as theirguests watched themexchange their sacredmarriage vows, whichwas then followed by asumptuous weddingreception where anunforgettable time washad by all. Congratula-tions to the happycouple and may yourlives be blessed!

Unfortunately, on a more sombre note, we were deeplysaddened by the sudden passing of Nikolaos Moulas onDecember 23rd, 2009. Niko who was one of the oldestmembers here in Montreal was extremely proud of hisIkarian heritage, his roots descending from the village ofFrantato. Niko’s constant support and his sincere lovetowards his “Sillogo” which was like his very own smallfamily, was truly endless and he touched many lives byhis presence. In loving memory of his untimely passing, our annual New Year’s event on January was postponed.May your memory be eternal our dear friend.

These were our Chapter’s most current news. We hopethat you all enjoy the rest of the winter season and weshall reconnect once again at spring time.

Greetings to all of our Brothers and Sisters from the faroff Pacific Northwest’s only Ikarian Chapter, MesariaChapter 27! We hope that everyone had a wonderful falland are surviving the cooler temperatures around thecountry. We had a short cold snap followed by the usualfall/winter rain and snow in the mountains. We lookforward to seeing the sun on July 5th!Mesaria Chapter is continuing to work on increasing andmaintaining membership across several states. We haveeleven paid members and are working towards identify-ing other Ikarians in the Pacific Northwest and encourag-ing their participation. Since we are spread out betweenseveral states we attempt to coordinate a time that isconvenient for all to meet, usually in Portland, Oregon. We had a pleasant visit and meeting, which was a 1st byour Supreme President, Sonia Stefanadis on MondayOctober 12, 2009 in Portland, Oregon. IN MEMORY OF

Christopher PassodelisFounding Chair of Pan-Icarian Foundation

April 1, 1932-January 2, 2010

Pittsburgh, PA

Survived by lovingwife Catherine(Vlahos) Passodelis, sons William,Michael, Christopherand Constantine, andtheir families.

The Icarians whocame to the UnitedStates, never forget-ting their belovedisland, always had intheir thoughts, “howcan we help those leftbehind?” Thus camethe idea of creating a Foundation to act as the beneficialarm to the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood and its members.

Christopher Passodelis took up the task of investigatinghow to create this entity. At the same time, he, along withPSP Christ Aivaliotis and PSP George L. Vassilaros, worked to convince the Brotherhood of the benefits ofestablishing a Foundation.

In the summer of 1964, Christopher Passodelis, alongwith a contingent from Pittsburgh, traveled to New York, which was the location of the Brotherhood’s nationalheadquarters at the time, in order to finalize the creationof a Foundation. There was much resistance and contro-versy, but thanks to Christopher Passodelis’ power ofpersuasion, those in opposition were won over and thetrip to New York proved successful in putting the finish-ing touches on establishing a Foundation.

In September 1965, the Charter was signed by Christo-pher Passodelis, PSP Christ Aivaliotis, and PSP GeorgeL. Vassilaros, and the Pan-Icarian Foundation wasformed.

Christopher Passodelis served as the founding chair of thePan-Icarian Foundation from 1965-1975. During thattime, he and PSP Gus Cherouvis were personally in-volved in making arrangements with hospitals anddoctors across the country for the care of patients that theFoundation brought to the United States for treatment. They worked diligently to bring these patients the bestpossible treatment available.

At the 1988 Pan-Icarian Convention in Pittsburgh, PA,Christopher Passodelis’ efforts were formally recognizedand he was decreed as an honorary Icarian by the Broth-erhood.

Since its inception, the Pan-Icarian Foundation hasundertaken and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars forthe following projects: schools, hospitals, scholarships,Icarian nursing home, road building, fire-fighting equip-ment, medical assistance, humanitarian aid, academicresearch, and support to the Pan-Icarian National Ar-chives. The Foundation has helped thousands of individu-als throughout the United States, Canada and Icaria.

Christopher Passodelis’ dream and driving force inmaking our Foundation a reality is something we shouldall take a moment to appreciate. May his memory beeternal.

Tripodes, Mary

April 17, 1915 – December 14, 2009

Marika “Mary” Tripodes 94gently passed away in theSouth Pasadena, Californiahome she lived in for 60years.

Mary was born in the villageof Arethousa, Icaria toNiketas & AlexandraTripodis. She emigrated toChicago in 1930 at age 14 tojoin her parents, and twoyounger American bornsisters (Dorothy andMinerva) she saw for the first time. Her older sisterKalliope lived in Cleveland. The entire family would notbe united until 1933 with the arrival of her brotherMarino from Icaria. She found work at a furrier puttingher talented hands to work and gave most all her earningsto her mother to help the family. In 1937 she met JackTripodes (from Kosikia) through her activities with otherIcarians. Jack and Mary were married in 1938 and settledin Cleveland where Jack ran the Washington Restauranton Kinsman Ave. with his brothers. When the Tripodesbrothers and their families moved to southern Californiafrom Cleveland in 1946 it started a mini flood of otherIcarian settlers to the suburbs east of Los Angeles.

While Mary was raising her young family, and working atthe family business, Gus’s BBQ in South Pasadena, shealso found time along with other transplanted Greeks toestablish organizations they had known in other parts ofthe country. Mary was a founding member of the Oinoechapter of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood in 1950, theDaughters of Penelope in 1952, and local Philoptochos in1953. Mary and husband Jack worked to start, maintain, and expand these groups all of which lead to the forma-tion of St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Pasadena. She helped organize the community’s first Greek schoolprogram in 1952 and church festival in 1953. Mary andhusband Jack always worked tirelessly together in thekitchen at countless church and community dinners andfundraisers. They were an inseparable couple for 54 yearsuntil Jack’s passing in 1992.

When her cooking partner Jack passed away she helpedthe community by joining others in preparing thedolmathes, Greek pastries, and other foods for the annualchurch festival. She learned to operate a loom in her

IN MEMORY OF

seventies and became an accomplished weaver with manyof her handicrafts sold at various locations in the Pasa-dena area as well as church festivals. In her eightiesarthritis slowed her loom production so she helped thechurch by preparing fig jam from fruit she picked in herown yard.

In 2009 Mary was temporarily in a convalescent homerecovering from a fractured arm during fig season. Hermain concern was “Who would pick the figs?” “Whowould make the jam for the church festival?” Her friendscame to the rescue this year and salvaged the crop andmade the jam. When she finally came home but stillweakened from the fracture she volunteered to help fillthe treat bags given to the children at the AHEPA’s annualHalloween party in October. This was a job she could doat home.

Mary’s hands were always busy doing for others. Shenever complained about the restrictions her aging bodyand failing health imposed on her. She outlived all herfriends but made new ones. When her favorite activitieswere no longer possible she found new avenues ofservice. She simply adapted and found other ways to beactive and help others. She often would comment “Idon’t know why people are so nice to me” or “Why haveI been so fortunate?”

Her greatest joy was to be surrounded by family andfriends usually at a lavish dinner she prepared at home- apractice she continued until the last year of her life. Herever smiling face and warm, generous heart will bemissed.

For the first time in 94 years Mary’s busy, helping handsare now still, but her fingerprints are everywhere.

She is survived by her children Virginia (Dino) Lappas,Peter Tripodes, Dr. Nikitas (Dena) Tripodes, grandchil-dren Andrea & Vincent Lappas, Maria (Eli) Ibrahimzade,Zachary, Marika, & Georgia Tripodes, great-grandchil-dren Max & Dina Ibrahimzade, brother Marino Tripodisof Chicago, and sisters Dorothy (George) Lardis ofWarren, Ohio and Minerva Zerlentes of Chicago, as wellas numerous, nieces, nephews, godchildren and cousins.

Donations in memory of Mary Tripodes can be made tothe Pan-Icarian Foundation.

IKARIAN INDEPENDENCE

2012 CELEBRATIONThe Importance of the 2012 Celebration of IkarianIndependence

For as long as I can remember, a poster depicting theIcarian battle forIndependence hungabove the television inmy family’s livingroom. As a child, Inever tried to figure outwhat the poster meant. It looked over myfamily and me whilewe ate. It looked overmy brothers and me aswe wrestled and did ourhomework. Although Inever tried to figure outwhat it meant when Iwas younger, this has changed since I began researchingthe story of Icarian independence.

When my family moved, the poster that once had hungabove the television vanished. I madly looked for it. Iwent downstairs. I opened up the closet, which was fullof other posters and family relics. I blew the dust awayand kept searching. I was determined to find it. I rav-aged through my older brothers’ football cleats, baseballbats, basketballs, and soccer balls. After searching for afew minutes, I found the poster. There it was. I knew itfrom sight but never really understood the weight of ituntil now. With a swipe of the hand, I could see the eyesof Lady Freedom staring back at me as they always had.

As I cleaned it up, the old poster did not miss a beat. Ms.Icaria was in the center as the Statue of Freedom. Anangel like character was flying ever so gracefully over abattlefield. Her grace was contrasted with her fierce lookof determination that, by the sight of it, makes you clenchyour jaw. She was holding a torch and a sword. With thelook of freedom in her eyes, the poster illustrates thestory of how our ancestors fought off their oppressors. Inthe background, there was what seems to be the future ofIcaria, a steamboat gun ship with the name Cleoprata –maybe the ship that carried the Ottoman Empire soldiersback to where they came from. A flag on the ship read,“AYTONOMOE ICARIA.” And bringing the fourcorners of the document together was the Icarian NationalAnthem.

This poster so eloquently depicts how Icarians live theirlives. The poster did not shape the Icarians; however, theIcarians shaped the poster. The poster is just a merereminder and a hint of how the people of this great islandprocured longevity and established their egalitarianbeliefs.

In the corner of the poster, there is an Icarian lying dead. The dead solider is George Spanos, who was from theother side of the island (Raches/Evdilos), but was killedin Chryssostomos. He seems to be, according to theposter, the only Icarian killed; however, his legacy willlast into the ages as if millions of Icarians died that day.The Icarians put the Ottoman soldiers onto a boat andshipped them away. This act represents the fundamentalbeliefs of Icaria and Icarians everywhere. Be it for evildoers or for the common person, after years of oppres-sion, the Icarians still respected their captors and, indoing so, life itself.

As I looked at the famous poster, I noticed a stamp withthe picture of the actress, activist, and politician MelinaMerkouri, taped to the outside of the frame. It was veryfitting to see her picture. She not only joined the struggleagainst the Greek Military Junta of 1967, but also in away, showed the progress a country can make without theoppressive rule of another country. She played largerthan life characters, both on and off the screen; however, she represented most what happens when a country isgiven the chance to live the way a free democratic stateshould with freedom for all. The marketplace of ideaswill bring out the truth. Her contribution to the isolationand fall of the Junta was very much like Icaria’s contribu-tion to Greece’s overall independence. Icaria was one ofthe first Greek Islands, if not the first, to become free ofthe Ottoman Empire’s rule. The Icarians became free onTuesday July 17, 1912. They did this themselves.

The Icarians gambled with their lives to gain indepen-dence after years of oppression, which now makes allseem possible – assuming you, like them, already haveunheard of strength both mentally and physically. I haveasked people older than I what stories they heard whenthey were young about Icaria’s independence, and Ilearned a lot, nothing more fitting than how Icarians livethan the story of the tax collector.

The tax collector for the Ottoman Empire held someIcarians as servants. These Icarians carried him aroundthe island. One day, however, the Icarians made a move

Page 62: ΟΡΓΑΝΟΝ ΤΩΝ ΑΠΑΝΤΑΧΟΥ ΙΚΑΡΙΩΝpan-icarian.com/magazine/winter_2010.pdforder to keep your members up to date with the latest Icarian news. In closing, as we

IKARIAN INDEPENDENCE

2012 CELEBRATIONthat still ripples down to my generation and no doubt willsend waves throughout the ages. As the Icarians carriedhim up one of the highest parts of the mountain, theythrew him over the side. No one was ever prosecuted forthe crime because when the Ottoman’s held a trial, it issaid that all the villagers took the blame. They screamed,“Oliemis afenti!” This was a vicious act but one that putsin perspective what Icarians, what our ancestors, under-went, and how they stuck together under extreme condi-tions. They suffered terribly in every sense of the word, and thinking about what they went through has been aforce in my life. A force that helps me live a better life.As I go through school, I think of the stories I have heard. It is the story of the tax collector and others that keep mylife and the things I do in perspective. Nothing I havedone or will do can measure up to such a task as livingunder such extreme conditions.

In 2012, we will celebrate 100 years of Icarian indepen-dence from the Ottoman Empire. The significance of thisis beyond anything I can explain; however, I know andunderstand that my family and I would not be here todaywithout the heroic efforts and sacrifice Icarians showed inexpelling their oppressors. That valor will never diebecause it lives within the teachings of our youth. Evenas generations go by, the core beliefs and values of theGreek culture, of Icarian culture, are instilled in our everymove because they make us who we are. Our blood doesnot let us forget our roots, nor will our bodies, nor willour minds, nor will our souls. I will forever be indebtedto those who freed Icaria. I might never know everystory or learn every fact about all their suffering, but I cantry to use what I do know to celebrate their lives on adaily basis.

Icarian Independence

On the island of Icaria, a very unique culture has formedfrom centuries of seclusion, oppression, and independence. The rich history of Icaria and its people is one that iscelebrated and must be remembered, as it helps us allrealize why Icarians have a distinct sense of pride.

Icaria, along with the rest of Greece, had endured Muslimcontrol under the Ottoman Empire for several hundred years.Icaria was officially incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in1521. Remaining relatively isolated for 300 years, Icaria wasfinally able to break away from the empire in 1827 duringthe Greek War for Independence. However, the island wasnot initially made a member of the newly formed indepen-dent country of Greece. Icaria fell back into Turkish rule andremained under their control until 1912. Finally, on July 17,1912, Icarian revolutionaries expelled a Turkish garrisonstationed in Icaria, gaining their independence.

Icaria remained an independent nation for five months. Duringthis period, the country maintained their own armed forces, created a flag and stamps, and had its own anthem. However, this time also saw great hardship, as food and transportationwere hard to come by. Icaria finally became part of Greece inNovember of 1912. Yet, this period of independence, althoughshort-lived, had a great impact on the people of Icaria. Mygreat grandmother Argiro Klicos Saffo, born 1901, recountedstories of the days of independence and the nationalism andpride that were felt by all. Icaria, a lonely and forgotten island, had stood up for itself against the mighty forces of the Turks. This achievement allowed Icarians to feel that their islandcould endure any hardship. While, surviving the roughestwaters in the Aegean, treacherous mountains, and threats frommany other sources, Icarians used their experiences andindependent way of life to overcome.

I visited Greece for the first time in the summer of 2008.Touring many other towns and Greek islands before arrivingin Icaria, it was very easy to see the independent spirit anddifferences found there. A care-free mentality, coupled with asense that all can be conquered, were very refreshing quali-ties. However, the unity that is felt on the island was the mostprevalent characteristic. After struggling through years ofoppression, fighting for, and eventually winning theirindependence fostered a sense of unity and closeness be-tween all who have ties to Icaria. This unity and sense offamily is what is truly celebrated with its independence. After almost 100 years, Icaria maintains that culture of itsown that makes it such a special place. As the anniversarynears, we must all remember what we have endured together,in order to realize how much more we can achieve together.Gregory Anthony Steele, Delegate - Chapter Therma

IKARIAN INDEPENDENCE

2012 CELEBRATIONIkaria Independence

Greece is a beautiful country filled with ancient archi-tects, temples, a rich history, a beautiful culture and anamazing story of how Greece fought for their indepen-dence. Some parts of Greece got their independence ontheir own before they become a part of Greece. Ikaria isa prime example of how this amazing small island had tofight for their independence before they became a part ofGreece. Here is a brief outlook on how Ikaria gained its indepen-dence and became part of Greece. Ikaria has beeninhabited since at least 7000 B.C. when it was inhabitedby the Neolithic pre-Hellenic people that Greeks calledPelasgians. Around 750 B.C. Greeks from Miletuscolonized Ikaria establishing a settlement in the area ofpresent day Campos, which they called Oenoe for itswine. In the sixth century B.C. Ikaria was absorbed bySamos and became part of Polycrates’ sea empire. At thistime the temple of Artemis at Nas, on the northeast cornerof the island was built. Nas was a sacred spot to the pre-Greek inhabitants of the Aegean, and an important port ofthe island in antiquity, the last stop before testing thedangerous seas around Ikaria. As my mother is from Nas,I appreciate the sacrifices my ancestors made for Ikaria. It was an appropriate place for sailors to make sacrificesto Artemis, who among other functions was a patron ofseafarers. The temple stood in good repair until themiddle of the 19th century when it was pillaged by thevillagers of Christos, Raches for marble for their localchurch. In 1939 it was excavated by the Greek archeolo-gist Leon Politis. During the German and Italian occupa-tion of Ikaria in the Second World War many of theartifacts unearthed by Politis disappeared. Local customhas it that there are still marble statues embedded in thesand off the coast.By the end of the fifth century A.D. Ikaria fell into thesphere of the Byzantine Empire. While Ikaria was undercontrol under Samos; Samos and the government inConstantinople, maintained a local fleet which offeredIkaria some protection from pirates. In the 14th centurythe Genoese took Chios, and Ikaria became part of aGenoese Aegean empire. When the Turks drove theGenoese from the Aegean the Knights of St. John, whohad their base in Rhodes, exerted some control overIkaria until 1521 when the Sultan incorporated Ikaria intohis realm. The Ikarians killed the first Turkish tax collec-tor, but somehow managed to escape punishment. After a long time, in 1827 Ikaria broke away from the

Ottoman Empire, but was forced to accept Turkish rule afew years later, and remained part of the Ottoman Empireuntil July 17, 1912 when it expelled a small Turkishgarrison during the Ikarian Independence. Ikaria gainedtheir independence on July 17, 1912, however Ikaria wasunable to join Greece until November of that year. Thefive months of independence were difficult years. Thenatives lacked food, were without regular transportationand postage service, and were on the verge of becomingpart of the Italian Aegean Empire. On November 4, 1912Ikaria became an island of Greece. Our ancestors in Ikaria took many sacrifices for theirpeople to have the freedom, life and liberty their de-served. If it was not for them, we will not have theopportunity to visit Ikaria and meet our family andrelatives. Yes, we all know Ikaria is a beautiful islandwith amazing beaches, gorgeous scenery, a laid back andcare free life, however we will not be able to experienceany of this if it was not for our ancestors. I believe it isimportant to give back and help out our island of Ikaria. When the chapters in the U.S. donate money to Ikaria forschools or hospitals, or when they send money to familieswho have a sick family member; it makes me feel goodinside that we are giving back for all of that the people ofIkaria did for us.I am very proud that I am Greek; however I am prouderto be an Ikarioti! This is because Ikarians are veryhumble people; they do not ask for much and appreciatethe little things they have. Sure Ikaria is not a rich island, like Crete or Samos. That does not matter to us. Themost important thing to the Ikarians is family, friends, and love, to enjoy yourself and to have a good time withthe people around you. Every time I go to Ikaria or toconventions I think to myself how lucky I am to knowsuch great people and to share great times with them andall of this happened because of how our ancestors foughtfor independence for them and the future generations ofIkaria. As we celebrate the 100 years of Ikaria Independence in2012 we all have to think and reflect of all the sacrificesour ancestors made for us to make it possible for ourgeneration and many others to be a unified, strong, dependent and a vital aspect of Greece.

ZHTO IKARIA!!!!!

IKARIAN INDEPENDENCE

2012 CELEBRATIONWhat if?

It’s June, 2010.You live on a small island in the Eastern Aegean, west ofthe Greek island of Samos and North of the Greek islandof Patmos. But your island doesn’t have a historic name. Everyonesimply calls it Turkey, because it’s a small part of themuch larger, mostly Muslim country. You’ve heard about a small, brave group of people thatonce called this island Ikaria. You think they were Greek, not Turkish, but you’re not positive. All you remember isthat, eventually, the Turks put down an uprising in theyear 1912 and wiped out most of them. Then slowly, all the people that spoke about them, wroteabout them, or even remembered them, started to disap-pear … until they were gone.Where names such as Yannis, Yorgos, and Sideris werecommon, Mehmet, Moustafa, and Celal are now thenorm. Minarets flank mosques that had once beenchurches and calls to prayer echo through the narrowstreets of towns that were once called Agios Kirikos andEvdilos. During World Wars I and II the residents of theisland used their caiques to assist the Germans and theirallies. Now the island has listening posts to monitor theactivity in the Aegean and to support the Turkish fighterjets that criss cross the sky.Today you get up out of bed and go down to breakfast, wondering if there’s any Turkish yogurt left in the fridge. You’re pretty fond of that stuff, and it goes really wellwith honey and nuts. But as you get down to the kitchenand open the refrigerator door, your Mom slaps you onthe arm.“No eating before you’re daily prayer!” she says.“Sorry, I forgot,” you respond. You then run up to yourroom to get your daily prayer rug. Boy is it a pain luggingthat thing around all day! But you have to carry it withyou at all times because, as a devoted Muslim, you areexpected to pray five times each day.You eventually get back downstairs and put your rug onthe floor before kneeling down to say your first prayer ofthe day while the huge poster of the Prime MinisterErdogan stares solemnly down at you from the wall toyour left.Once you’re done, your Mom asks, “So what are yougoing to do all day?”

“No idea,” you answer. “Probably go to the beach.”“Sounds like fun,” your Mom says. “Be careful.”

Then you remember – your sister is off from school today– it’s Saturday!“Can my sister come along?” you ask hopefully, knowingwhat the answer will be.Your mother frowns.“Absolutely not,” she says. “How is she supposed toswim? You know she has to keep her dress on at all times. What kind of family do you think we are?”“Sorry,” you respond. “I just forgot, I guess.”You and your friend, Mehmet, get to the beach. The only group of women on the beach are tourists, probably from Greece. They are dark, pretty and talkingextremely loudly – which draws stern looks of disap-proval from the other Muslim men next to you.You kind of want to go over and say hi, but you hesitate. That would be frowned upon. It’s June, 2010.You sit up in bed.“Whoa,” you think. “That was a crazy dream.”You quickly run downstairs, kiss your Mom on the cheekand bolt out the door on the way to your friend Spiro’shouse. You can’t wait to tell him about the insane dreamyou just had.The two of you then walk over to the local zaharoplasteiofor good, old fashioned Greek tiropites. Then you head down to the beach to enjoy the sunshine, sea and, of course, all the pretty Ikarian girls.

Ikarian Independence 2012

Ikarian independence is a century of freedom, but itmeans more than just the Ottomans being overthrown.

It means reaching 100 years of protecting our home, and the ending of slavery and persecution.

It means Ikarians united by pride for their island, with the grand mountains, good food and blue ocean.

It means 100 years of dancing under the stars on our freeland, and the simple pleasures of swimming in theAegean.

It means following traditions passed down throughgenerations, and remembering our ancestors and ourfounder, Ikaros.

It means 100 years working together to protect families, and watching the locals and island as it grows.

We continue to make friends when fellow Ikariotes arenear, and enjoy relaxing together when we are all fed.

And as Ikarian independence approaches 100 years, will we be ready for what lies ahead?

Hrisoula Mavrophilipos

2012. To the rest of the world, it is just another year. But tous, it is something more significant than that. 2012 is the100th year of Ikarian independence. To fully appreciate theimportance of this landmark you must think back to 1912.You must think back to all of the events that have occurredsince. Our island, like many, was not given its freedom. Itwas earned after hundreds of years of hardships. Afterhundreds of years of Ottoman oppression, we earned ourright to call ourselves free. But gaining that freedom wasnot the end of the hardships, but was just the tip of theiceberg. Maintaining it proved to be a challenge in itself. Not many years passed before we had to defend ourselvesduring the Great War. Although we were still very young,we managed to stave off invasion and maintain the freedomthat we worked so hard for. Hard times and depressionsensued, but weak and weary, we pushed forward, wemaintained, and grew as a free people. Our small islandonly enjoyed a few years of peace before we were invadedonce again. Some fled, some stayed, some fought, but allsacrificed. They sacrificed what was theirs so that theycould give for the future. Though Italians and Germansmarched across our island, we once again managed to drivethem off and stay strong. Though the second Great War hadended, a new conflict brewed in our motherland. A civilwar. Through Ottomans, Fascists, Nazis, and Communists, our island managed to stay strong. We were just a tiny shipin the turbulent and stormy seas……yet we stayed afloatthrough one storm after another. It is almost as if godhimself was testing us to see if we were worthy of the giftwe had been given. I like to think that we passed withflying colors. Our island, bruised and battered from theyears, still bears the scars of Italian occupation and Com-munist influence. But what has not killed us has only madeus stronger. We are the children and the grandchildren ofthose great souls who fought so that we could have a placeto call home. They gave up everything so that we can havesomething. As a testament to their sacrifices and hardshipswe remain to carry on their traditions that they carried withthem. The same traditions that they held under Turkish rule. The same traditions that they carried across battlefields inwar. The same traditions that were carried while takingrefuge in Africa. The same traditions that we carried acrossthe seas to America. Those same traditions that we enjoytoday. 2012 is a celebration of our hard earned freedom. Tomany, freedom is a concept but to us, freedom is a tangiblething. This rock we call Ikaria, is our freedom. It is ourhome. It is a symbol of what our ancestors went through.Out of respect to them, I raise my glass in 2012 and I toastto the one and the only Ikaria. 100 years may seem like along time, but to me, it is a hell of a good start.Once and Always Ikarian, Fanourios Seindanis
