A Migrant’s SonA Fringe Festival Event

Direct from a sell-out Adelaide Cabaret Festival season, ‘A Migrant's Son’ explores one of the most colourful times in Australian history, the arrival of the Greeks! Brought to life through original compositions, live band and La La Land choir led by Carol Young, this unique and touching account is both hard-hitting and hilarious.

Written and performed by award winning cabaret artist Michaela Burger (‘Exposing Edith’), the show follows the story of a poor migrant, who defied all odds and rose above adversity. From deliveries for the family bakery at age seven to opal mines in Coober Pedy, his unrelenting determination to build a successful life is comical and dramatic.

Complete your night with a two course dinner and show package catered by The Greek Palace. Note: If you wish to be seated as a group please make one booking or contact [email protected] to reserve your table of 10, 8 or 4

Men and Women in Positions of Power in the Mycenaean Greek World: Examples from the Linear B textsDr Stavroula (Stephie) Nikoloudis Presented by Festival Hellenika®

Dr Stavroula (Stephie) Nikoloudis from La Trobe University is an archaeologist, whose research and teaching revolve around Mycenaean textual studies (Linear B script), Classical, Modern Greek language and literature.

Linear B is the script inscribed into the clay tablets that served as the administrative documents of the Mycenaeans of the late Bronze Age. This script reflects the oldest surviving form of the Greek language, ca. 1450-1200 BCE. During this time, palace societies flourished on the Greek mainland, characterised by monumental tholos tombs, richly decorated citadels, and complex bureaucracies involved in the production, storage and redistribution of agricultural goods, textiles, metals and luxury items.

In this presentation, Linear B tablets discovered at the Palace of Pylos in Messenia are used to reconstruct the social and political hierarchy of the Mycenaean community of Pylos and to delve into the activities of several powerful individuals secret.

Another Life: Human Flows / Unknown OdysseysPresented by the Adelaide Festival

Each day sees the geopolitical climate becoming more defined by the impact of mass migration and, as this is a recurring theme in the 2019 Adelaide Festival, it’s fitting that the centrepiece of its visual arts component is this mighty exhibition from the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.

Twenty-six photographers – the majority of them active photojournalists – take part in this group exhibition, presenting over 160 of their works, chronicling one of the greatest dramas of recent history: the endless flow of desperate people out of Africa across the Mediterranean. Focusing on the human element, each lens finds its own way of portraying the refugees’ despair, agony, loss, and sense of impasse.

Revisiting Rebetika RootsDr. Demeter Tsounis Presented by Festival Hellenika®

We have come to know rebetika as a broad genre of Greek urban music which developed and evolved in the urban and coastal regions of Asia Minor, the Aegean Islands, Greece and the United States in the first half of the 20th century.

The early history of rebetika began in 19th century café-aman performances by visiting troupes from Asia Minor. They travelled throughout the Balkans and became popular as reported in the Athenian press between the 1870s and the 1890s.

This talk explores newspaper reports of café-aman performances documented by Thodoros Chatzipantazis (1986) in his book titled "The Lovers of Asian Music". The Peak of Athenian Café Aman in the Years of the Reign of George I. A Contribution to the Study of the Prehistory of Rebetika (many and varied books), discusses fluctuations in the public reception of café-aman music and reveals contrary yet prevailing ideological narratives regarding the nature of Greek culture and Greek nationhood.

Music Hellenika®«Την Ελλάδα αγαπώ .... αλλά κι εσένα»"I love Greece …. but also you"

A musical tribute to composer Marios Tokas

Renowned composer Marios Tokas is considered to be one of the most talented and significant composers of Greek popular songs during the 80s and 90s. Born in Cyprus he lived as a soldier the terrible events of the Turkish invasion in 1974. In 1975 he moved to Greece where he enrolled in the Philosophy Department of the Athens University and the Conservatorium of Music.

He recorded his first album in 1978 with singer Manolis Mitsias and since then his rise in the music fraternity of Greece was meteoric. Songs like “S’anazito sti Saloniiki” and “Ladadika” by Dimitris Mitropanos, “San trelo fortigo” and “To Simadi” by Yiannis Parios, “Exartate” by Haris Alexiou, “I diki mou I patrida” by Yiorgos Dalaras, “Annoula tou hionia” by Antonis Kalogiannis and so many more dedicated to love, everyday people and his beloved homeland Cyprus, have become classical hits of Greek popular music.

Unfortunately his life was cut short at the age of 54 depriving us of more beautiful songs. This concert, coordinated by Tassos Capetanakis, will feature local talented vocalists and musicians who, directed by Zambica DeGeorge, will perform Toka’s most popular songs accompanied by visual images and video segments giving the audience a complete insight into his work and personality.

The Medea Project: Medea Goes to the MoviesDr Marguerite Johnson Presented by Festival Hellenika®

Who was Medea? A sorceress, a lover, a seductress, an abused woman or a murderess? Join us with Professor Marguerite Johnson from The University of Newcastle, for the first of two brilliant talks on this powerful and enduring female archetype in Greek myth.

Professor Johnson will take us on a journey from Colchis to Corinth to screen. For thousands of years, the myth of Medea has intrigued and frightened us. Originating in the oral tradition of ancient Greece and eventually taking stable forms in poetry, tragedy and epic, Medea’s story of thwarted love, uncontrollable passion, murder, mayhem and magic continued into Roman culture.

She is still with us in both traditional and new forms, and has been the subject of several films, including those by distinguished – and sometimes infamous – directors, such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jules Dassin and Lars von Trier. Each one contributing to the myth by including personal, historical and cultural interpretations.

The Medea Project: Medea - The Mother who Killed her ChildrenProfessor Areti Devetzidis Presented by Festival Hellenika®

The Medea Project: Medea - The Mother who Killed her Children

In this our second talk on Medea, Dr Areti Devetzidis will present an entirely different and fresh understanding of the character of Medea.

In the age of #metoo, when the fairer and more decent part of the world seems to be reviewing society’s attitudes to women, it appears to be a good time to review attitudes towards one of the most famous and probably most vilified female figures in history.

Dr Devetzidis has undertaken an intensive study of the myth of Medea for her thesis, using the powerful 1838 painting of Medea by Eugene Delacroix which argues that Medea did not kill her children in order to revenge herself on her unfaithful husband but because she wanted to save her children from a fate worse than death, the painting and that story seemed to come together.

HydraPresented by State Theatre Company and Queensland Theatre in association with Adelaide Festival Centre.

A decorated war correspondent and a talented young journalist meet, fall in love and set off on a global adventure, leaving scandal behind them in post-World War II Australia. It’s 1956 and Australia’s famous literary couple, George Johnston and Charmian Clift have moved to the Greek island of Hydra to focus their lives fully on their writing. Charmian, a burgeoning writing talent, creatively dominated by the tuberculosis ridden George, throws herself into this new community. Meanwhile, as George determinedly crafts what would become his Miles Franklin Award winning masterpiece, My Brother Jack, their marriage becomes increasingly strained and they discover that living in paradise has a price.

State Theatre Company favourite Sue Smith (Kryptonite, Machu Picchu, Brides of Christ) has crafted a sweeping tale told from the perspective of George and Charmian’s eldest son Martin. Hydra brings a soaring emotional tale of two extraordinary literary lives to the stage.

Two Poms talk - Greece, Greeks and all things Hellenic… both English and both speaking Greek and more than a handful of years between them in coming to and from Greece, see Greece and Greeks from a unique perspective. Resolutely philhellene, with feet in both camps and married to Greek wives these two have more than a bit to say about Greece. The Greek Migration Experience: The new wave of Greek migrants to AustraliaPresented by OEEGA in conjunction with The SA History Festival

Since the establishment of The Greek Migration Experience, in conjunction with the Oral History Association of Australia, there has been a more recent influx of young Greek migrants within contemporary Australia. Dr Maria Palaktsoglou will explore this new wave.

The Greek economic crisis, begun in 2009 continues to beset Greece and has resulted in many economic, social and political upheavals. One important result is the mass migration of many people, especially young and educated ones, to Europe, the United States and Australia.

This is comparable in numbers to the 1950s and 1960s. Contemporary Greek immigrants have adapted to the new mode of communication which has changed dramatically; a range of social media platforms, including blogs, are now commonly used rather than diaries and letters. Current migrants’ reports cover themes such as the logistics of migration, the precise cost of living or the way of life. This is a fascinating presentation not to be missed.

From the Resurrection to PentecostPresented by Saint John of Damascus Byzantine Choir

The fifty days after the Holy Resurrection are marked in the Orthodox Church by hymns whose content exude brightness and joy. The music of these hymns cannot but do the same. The musical settings are more ornate and celebratory than during the Lenten period, in keeping with the good news that, indeed, Christ has risen and that 'all nations are radiant'. Compositions range from 'Christ is Risen', heard on the night of the Resurrection to 'Heavenly King, comforter' which is chanted at the feast of Pentecost. The Saint John of Damascus Byzantine Choir will perform a selection of hymns from this joyful and holy period, offering the listener an opportunity to enjoy the acoustic splendour of Byzantium.

The 6:30pm concert will be preceded by a Vespers service which will begin at 5:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

Join us for an unforgettable night of food, fun, wine and entertainment as we explore the unique terroir from one of the oldest wine making regions of the world. Think Santorini, and the queen of Greek white varieties, Assyrtiko! Or the black noble variety of Naoussa in Northern Greece, Xinomavro! Not forgetting the most widely planted red varietal, Agiorgitiko. Stay tuned for more details as this will be an event not to be missed
