Building a New Entertainment Legacy in 2008—Onkyo’s 2nd Generation High-Def Line-Up

Delivering High-Definition Audio and Video ContentAs high-definition media fulfills its immensepromise, home entertainment is ready forsome powerful and positive changes. You cansee these changes right throughout Onkyo’ssecond-generation high definition-capable2008 A/V receiver line-up.This range handlesvirtually every source available—including Blu-ray Disc, satellite and cablebroadcasts, high-def gaming, and HD Radio and satellite radio broadcasts. You’realso primed for the potential of bit-for-bit, lossless surround sound from Dolby®

TrueHD, Dolby® Digital Plus, DTS-HD® Master Audio, and DTS-HD® HighResolution Audio.

High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI™) for PureDigital DeliveryEvery A/V receiver in the Onkyo line-up incorporates HDMI,enabling a pure, all-digital 1080p video signal to be sent throughone connection. Almost all can process studio master-quality multichannel audio(from Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio). This version also brings yougreater bandwidth, Deep Color™, lip-sync correction, and high frame rates.Withinthe 2008 range, you can find receivers with up to five HDMI inputs, and even dualoutputs for connection to a flat-panel display and a 1080p video projector.

HQV Reon-VX Chip for 1080p Video Upscaling andProcessingRenowned for enabling the most sophisticated video processing inhome theatre, the HQV Reon-VX chip can be found onboard theTX-NR906 and TX-SR876. It provides the ultimate support forstandard definition and high definition deinterlacing; 1080p videoscaling; filtering of jaggies and artifacts; and the reduction of random,“mosquito” and block (codec) noise. HQV Reon-VX also enablescolor region enhancement and the rendering of more than onebillion colors.

Faroudja DCDi Edge™ and DCDi Cinema™ (via Torino)Video Processing (with 1080i and 1080p Upscaling)Faroudja video processors give Onkyo’s2008 A/V receivers the power to bring outthe best from both high-definition andstandard-definition video content. For example, the TX-SR606 uses an onboardFaroudja DCDi Edge video processor to convert interlaced video signals toprogressive scan signals and to effectively eliminate video artifacts from HDTVimages. It also has the ability to upscale any lower resolution video signal to 1080ifor output via HDMI. On a more advanced level, the TX-SR706 and TX-SR806 usean advanced controller to support Faroudja’s DCDi Cinema video processing.Thismore robust version of DCDi further reduces video noise without sacrificing imagequality and sharpness. It also enables 1080p upscaling of all sources via HDMI.

Meeting THX® Select2™ Plus and THX® Ultra2™ PlusBenchmarksFrom early design concepts to product rollout,THXand Onkyo work together on selected A/V receiversto ensure THX performance standards are met.THXengineers spend countless hours testing and analyzing sound quality, usability andinteroperability. Onkyo’s 2008 A/V receiver range will feature two new THXstandards:THX Select2 Plus and THX Ultra2 Plus. These standards include THX®

Loudness Plus™, which will enable home theatre audiences to experience the richdetails and ambient sound of a surround mix at any volume level.

Audyssey Technologies for Room Acoustics and LoudnessCorrectionOnkyo A/V receivers use Audyssey’s MultEQ™ XT, MultEQ™ or2EQ™ to counter distortion in dedicated home theatres. All ofthese solutions focus on the frequency response and timedomain (where most of the problems lie) across the entirelistening area. The results are immediately obvious—a clear, well-balanced and natural sound. The 2008 A/V receiver range has anew Audyssey technology—Dynamic EQ™—that selects the bestfrequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment, forthe best listening experience at any volume.

Push-Pull Amplification with Three-Stage InvertedDarlington CircuitryPush-pull amplification uses different transistors toseparately amplify the positive and negative halves of thewaveform, bringing greater efficiency to the TX-NR906and TX-SR876 (both parallel), and the TX-SR806 and TX-SR706 (both single). These select Onkyo A/V receiversuse three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry to removeany instance of distortion.

Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) ProvidingAmplification BackboneThe cornerstone of any Onkyo A/V receiver,WRATsupports high-quality audio reproduction of the latesthigh-definition A/V formats. It comprises three keyelements: (1) A low negative-feedback design for cleaner audio across thefrequency range; (2) Closed ground-loop circuits to cancel individual circuit noise

and keep the ground potential free of distortion; and (3) A high instantaneouscurrent capability to handle speaker reflex energy and impedance fluctuations.

Harnessing Power for Audio PerformanceOnkyo’s High Current Power Supply concept(H.C.P.S.) is based around power transformerswith the capability to respond to the widedynamics of home theatre. In the case of theTX-NR906, a massive toroidal transformerimproves power efficiency and radiates very littlenoise into the surrounding circuitry, whiletwo separate transformers caterspecifically to audio and videoprocessing. You’ll also find capacitors(operating at up to 18,000 microfarads) that storethe charge necessary to support an effective power supply.

Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC)Onkyo’s VLSC employs a unique digital-to-analogconversion circuit to mitigate the effects of signalnoise. Data is converted between discrete sampling points, which are then joinedwith analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form.Theresult—a noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source.

Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-Bit DACs for All ChannelsSelected Onkyo A/Vreceivers—namely the TX-NR906 and TX-SR876 —use a Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit DAC with an advanced Texas Instruments DAC architecture(PCM1796) to achieve excellent dynamic performance and improved tolerance toclock jitter.

Texas Instruments Digital Signal Processing (DSP) ChipsOnkyo A/V receivers use TI (Aureus™) DSP chips in the audioprocessing chain. They support the latest and mostinnovative audio signal processing features and help createa richer listening experience.

Network for Streaming Audio Files and Internet RadioThe TX-NR906’s network lets you controlyour digital music files (AAC,WMA, MP3,WAV, OGG) and internet radio via anEthernet network between the TX-NR906and your computer. It also enables you toaccess music files from a USB mass storagedevice or a portable audio player, through a USB port. You can use a portal site—vTuner—to access internet radio, podcasts and media content. At the heart of thenetwork is Windows Media Connect or Windows Media Player (N.B. the TX-NR906 is Microsoft PlaysForSure Certified and Certified for Windows Vista®).

Neural™-THX™ Surround Decoding TechnologyNeural-THX Surround enables gaming and broadcast contentto be encoded into 5.1 or 7.1 channels and transmitted fordecoding by the TX-SR876 and TX-NR906.This technologyreduces the bandwidth needed by broadcasters to deliversound content and enables 7.1-channel support for gaming and movies.

Playback of Different A/V Sources Throughout the HomePowered Zone 2 and Zone 3 bring multi-zoneentertainment to your home through dedicated lineouts, pre outs, and speaker connections. Independentcontrol of volume levels, speaker balance, and bass/treble levels for the separatezones is available on selected models.

Bi-Amping and BTL (Bridged Transless or Bridging)CapabilityTaking a cue from the world of high-end audio, Onkyo’s 2008 line-up offers bi-amping and bridging capabilities. This allows for a number of different home theatreset-ups beyond the standard surround-sound configurations. Compatible frontspeakers can be bi-amped for separate tweeter and woofer inputs. Also, bridgingenables you to double the power output to compatible front speakers.

RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) for System Control*Select Onkyo A/V receivers offer integrated system control withcertain HDMI-compatible high-definition displays, DVD and hard-disk recorders, and Blu-ray Disc players. With one remote control, you can controlcertain functions, including Standby,Volume and Direct Change. These receivers canseamlessly integrate with other leading brand-name devices, including those withPanasonic VIERA Link™ and Toshiba REGZA LINK™ capability, as well as selected Sharp displays.*Compatibility depends on respective model.
