Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the psychiatric diagnoses is
experienced from the perspective of the social workers, that work with people with
mental illnesses at a psychiatric facility home. The social workers have different
perspectives of how the diagnoses influence their work in neither a positive or
negative way. The diagnoses are today becoming the explanation of human suffering
and in a way they participate in defining the standards for acceptable behaviour in the
society.
In the thesis semi-structured interviews have been used as the method to
generate experiences about this topic from the view of five social workers. The
method has contributed that I could get the answers that I needed for answering my
issue and for staying open-minded while exploring the issue.
The results have shown that a few of the social workers in this thesis find that
the diagnosis often inhibit the work, because the people with the mental illness hide
behind the diagnosis and use it as an apology for their behaviour and for not
participating in the activities they need to while they are in rehabilitation.
The social workers find it difficult to handle the restrictions that the system of
diagnosis gives their work, because it doesnt seem to be relevant in the work with
relations, which they find more important in the rehabilitation of these kinds of
people.
Another result in the analysis shows, that the social workers isnt aware of the
fact of stigmatizing effect from them, but research shows that this group of social
workers are in risk of stigmatizing more than they think. It can affect the people with
mental illnesses and be a reason why they become their diagnosis.
Conclusively, this thesis indicates that the social workers at the facility home
seem to have a difficult work, because they have to have the abilities to switch
between to types of identities in their work the professional identity and the
institutional identity. Today the modern society is focusing at the social worker and
that they need to try to make the people as independent as possible and make them
take responsibilities for their own lives. The social workers must not be the expert and
take decisions for what is the best for these people. Instead the people with mental
illnesses have to make the decisions by them selves and find their own way through
their rehabilitation with the support from the social workers. But in the end that is

difficult, when the society makes restrictions for their work and they need to follow
these while making acceptable relations.
I hope that the findings of this thesis will be contributing the discussion about
the use of the psychiatric diagnoses and make awareness among the social workers
that work at these places and positions. I hope it will help the social workers to reflect
on their practise of work and think about stigmatizing in their work.
