Current production ~okeanos History

- Design started late 2010

- 15 code experts, better in Python & Linux than.. Greek - not enough…

- Production since July 2011

Numbers (6/2014)

- Users: > 8000

- VMs: > 9500 currently active

- More than 400.000 VMs spawned so far (started/destroyed)

- More than 120.000 vlans spawned so far (user owned VLANs)

Typical VM flavor (more than 340 flavors available! )

- 4 cores (vCPUs), 80GB Hard Disk, 4 or 8GB RAM

• Virtual machine cluster management tool (2006-)

• BSD license since Sept 2014 (open-sourced since 2007)

• Used by Google for its internal computing infrastructure (IT Corp.)

• Synnefo people are the biggest external contributors for Ganeti since 2009 (Google I/O 2012)

Lessons Learned:

• You need to think, design and implement always at large scale,

using the same group that started the project (Google quote)

• You need competition -The offices at the opposite side of the road,

should do the same as you

• Team spirit is everything, have your ears open to all views

• In software: guides are more important than code

• If you don’t have one next to you, try further…

• There is only one market for all kinds of software: the world
