Η περιήγηση στις Καπναποθήκες Παπαστράτου μέσα από το φακό του Χρίστου Σιμάτου

είναι ένα οδοιπορικό στις πιο δυνατές μνήμες της πόλης. Μέσα από τις χαραμάδες του

χρόνου αναδύονται ονειρικά τα αρώματα από σπάνια χαρμάνια και η αύρα μιας εποχής

που έφυγε αλλά δεν ξεχάστηκε.

Η ιστορία της οικογένειας Παπαστράτου είναι η ζωντανή κληρονομιά μας και τα

έργα τους, ως ιερή παρακαταθήκη, μνημειακός θησαυρός. Αν στον κτιριακό πολιτισμό

μιας πόλης καταγράφεται η συλλογική του μνήμη, τότε το Αγρίνιο, έχει εμποτιστεί από τα

έργα των μέγιστων ευεργετών μας. Ένα από αυτά, οι Καπναποθήκες, αρχιτεκτονικό στολίδι

του κέντρου της πόλης, διατηρούν ισχυρή και αναλλοίωτη την παρουσία τους στο χρόνο.

Μας υπενθυμίζουν με τον πλέον εμφατικό τρόπο την ανάγκη προστασίας της ιστορικής

μας ταυτότητας και επαναφέρουν την δέσμευση για ανάσχεση της αλλοίωσης της πολεο-

δομικής φυσιογνωμίας της πόλης.

Η οικογένεια Παπαστράτου δίδαξε, σε εποχές μεγάλων στερήσεων, την προσφορά

στην Πατρίδα, τον άνθρωπο, την παιδεία και τον πολιτισμό. Το μεγαλείο τους αποτυπώνεται

στα εμβληματικά έργα που άφησαν ως δωρεά στους συμπολίτες τους.

Το λεύκωμα του Χρίστου Σιμάτου γίνεται το όχημα ώστε, οι επόμενες γενιές, να

δικαιώσουν τη μνήμη. Ως μελλοντικοί θεματοφύλακες, να ανακαλύψουν την αξία της πο-

λιτιστικής κληρονομιάς και να επικυρώσουν ότι η ευεργεσία των Αδερφών Παπαστράτου

έχει ευγνώμονες αποδέκτες.

The tour in the Papastratos Tobacco Warehouses , through the lens of Christos Simatos,

is a journey in the most vivid memories of our city. Through the cracks of time, dreamy

scents of rare blends emerge, along with the aura of an era gone and forgotten.

The history of the Papastratos family is our living heritage. Their works, our sacred

legacy, our monumental treasure. If the collective memory of a city is inscribed in its

building culture, Agrinio is permeated by the works of our great benefactors. Specifically,

the Tobacco Warehouses, an architectural ornament in the center of our city, preserve a

powerful and unchangeable presence in time. They remind us, in the most emphatic way,

of the need to protect our historical identity and to renew our commitment to intercepting

the degradation of the urban planning of our city.

The Papastratos family has taught us, in the times of great need and deprivation,

what it means to offer all you can to your country, to your fellow man, to education

and culture. Their magnificence is imprinted in the emblematic works they left behind as

donations to their fellow citizens.

The album by Christos Simatos becomes the means by which oncoming generations

bring memory into its own. As future guardians, they discover the worth of our cultural

heritage and they asseverate that the benefaction of the Papastratos Brothers has found

grateful recipients.

Άπό το φως στο σκοτάδι, από το σήμερα στο χτες, από τον θόρυβο της ζωής στη σιωπή

της απουσίας. Πορεία αμφίδρομη. Τι κι αν κάποτε έσφυζαν από ζωή; Σήμερα στέκουν εκεί

ερμητικά κλειστές, με τους τοίχους τους να σφιχταγκαλιάζουν την ιστορία… Σ’ ένα ταξίδι

στο παρελθόν μας καλεί ο Χρίστος Σιμάτος… Στόχος του δεν είναι να παγώσει τον χρόνο

αλλά να αποτυπώσει την αίσθηση της στιγμής συντηρώντας τη μνήμη. Το ορατό είναι μόνον

το πρόσχημα. Κάθε κλικ της μηχανής του γίνεται το ίχνος του χρόνου και της εποχής που

ζωντανεύει εικόνες ποτισμένες με τον ιδρώτα τόσων ανθρώπων και την αγωνία τους για τον

επιούσιο… Γίνεται αχτίδα που μετεωρίζεται και δονεί το χτες φωτίζοντας ταυτόχρονα κάτι

από το εντός του καθενός μας. Οι σχισμές των ξύλινων παραθυρόφυλλων γίνονται δίοδος

απ’ όπου το ψυχρό φως διαπερνά σαγηνευτικά τη ζεστασιά του χώρου αγκαλιάζοντας τη

σιωπηλή του τάξη. Αναδεικνύει τα σημάδια του χρόνου στους ταλαιπωρημένους σοβάδες

και τα ξύλινα δάπεδα σαν τα ζωγραφισμένα εσωτερικά του Rembrandt και του Vermeer,

προσδίδοντάς τους άλλες διαστάσεις.

Έζησα τη χαρά της φωτογραφικής διαδικασίας, από την ένταση της ανακάλυψης

του χώρου έως το μαγικό κλάσμα του δευτερολέπτου της δημιουργίας… Νοιώθω ακόμη

τη σκόνη, τη μυρωδιά, ακούω το τρίξιμο της ξύλινης σκάλας σε κάθε μας βήμα καθώς

ανιχνεύαμε με τη Μαριάννα τα σκοτάδια του, ξάφνιασμα λες απ’ την παρουσία μας που

τάραζε για λίγο τη μακροχρόνια ακινησία της. Κοντοστάθηκα, σαν ν’ άκουγα ψιθύρους,

φωνές, χτυποκάρδια, περπατησιές και μετά πάλι σιωπές…

Ο φωτογράφος μένει στη σκιά αφήνοντας διακριτικά το φως να έρθει προς αυτόν…

Η τεχνική του τελειότητα δεν πνίγει το συναίσθημα αφού ό,τι αποτυπώνεται στο κάδρο

είναι εξ ίσου σημαντικό με τα εκτός απ’ αυτό σημαινόμενα. Κι όσο φωτίζονται οι σκιές τόσο

ενεργοποιείται η σύνδεση του χώρου με το βλέμμα μας προσδίδοντας άλλη αίσθηση στη

συνομιλία τους με τον χρόνο… Άυλο και υλικό συμπορεύονται, διαχέονται στην ατμό-

σφαιρα… Οι άδειες καπναποθήκες Παπαστράτου αναδεικνύονται και γίνονται αφορμή

για αφύπνιση της συλλογικής μας μνήμης.

Ο Σιμάτος στέκει με σεβασμό απέναντί τους, τις προσεγγίζει ως προσκυνητής δί-

νοντας χώρο για να αφηγηθούν την ιστορία τους, με πρωταγωνιστές παρόντες κι απόντες.

Για να συνθέσουν το δικό τους επιμύθιο…

From light to darkness, from today to yesterday, from the commotion of life to the

silence of absence. A course run two ways. Sometime ago they were teeming with life, and

so? Today they stand there hermetically sealed, with their walls embracing history tightly…

Christos Simatos invites us to take a journey into the past…. His goal isn’t to just freeze

time, but to imprint the sensation of the moment preserving memory. The visible is just the

pretext. Every click of his camera becomes the mark of the time and era he brings to life,

images soaked with the sweat of so many people and their agony to get their everyday

bread… It becomes a sunray that soars and vibrates yesterday, at the same time shining

on the inner self of each and every one of us. The cracks of the wooden shutters become

a passageway through which the cold light seductively traverses the warmth of space,

embracing its silent order. It illuminates the marks of time on the weathered plasters and

the wooden floors, resembling the interiors painted by Rembrandt and Vermeer, attaching

new dimensions to them.

I have experienced the joy of the whole procedure of taking photographs, from the

intense moment accompanying the discovery of the right place to that magical fraction of

the second of creation…I can still feel the dust, the smell, I can hear the creaking sound

of the wooden staircase in our every step as we were fumbling about in the darkness of

space with Marianna, our presence stirring up slightly its lasting quiescence. I stood still,

thought I was hearing whispers, voices, heartbeats, footsteps and then again silence…

The photographer stands aside, in the shade, discretely letting light come to him…

His excellent workmanship does not drown the emotions, since whatever is depicted in

the frame is equally important to what is meant outside of it. The more shadows are lit,

the more the connection of space with our gaze is activated, attaching a new sensation

to their converse with time… The immaterial and the material walk along together and

disperse into the atmosphere… The empty Papastratos Tobacco Warehouses step out into

the light and trigger the awakening of our collective memory.

Simatos faces them with respect, he approaches them as a pilgrim, granting them

the appropriate space to narrate their stories, with the leading actors being present or

absent. So to compose their final verse…

Έχουν περάσει περισσότερα από 100 χρόνια από την ίδρυση στο Αγρίνιο της εταιρίας

ΑΦΟΙ ΠΑΠΑΣΤΡΑΤΟΥ ΟΕ. Μιας εταιρίας που έμελλε να διανύσει μια μακρά πορεία στο φως

και τον χρόνο, να δημιουργήσει τη μεγαλύτερη καπνοβιομηχανία της χώρας, στηρίζοντας

διαρκώς την οικονομική και κοινωνική ζωή της Ελλάδας.

Συνεχίζοντας με σταθερά και σίγουρα βήματα το όραμα των ιδρυτών της, η ΠΑ-

ΠΑΣΤΡΑΤΟΣ εξακολουθεί να είναι άρρηκτα δεμένη με τη γενέτειρά τους. Το Λεύκωμα

«Καπναποθήκες Παπαστράτου - πορεία στο φως και στον χρόνο» με υλικό από τις παλιές

καπναποθήκες Παπαστράτου αποτελεί άλλη μια απόδειξη του τρόπου με τον οποίο το

Αγρίνιο τιμά και φωτίζει το κληροδότημα της φιλοσοφίας της οικογένειας Παπαστράτου

στις επόμενες γενιές. Έχω τη βεβαιότητα ότι αυτή η σχέση θα συνεχιστεί με την ίδια συνέ-

πεια και αφοσίωση.

More than 100 years have passed from the foundation of the PAPASTRATOS CMC S.A.

tobacco company in Agrinio. A company that was meant to go a long way in light and

time, to become the largest tobacco industry of our country, continuously supporting the

financial and social life of Greece.

Going on with steady and secure steps, continuing the vision of its founders,

PAPASTRATOS CMC S.A. remains unbreakably connected with their birthplace. The album

“Papastratos Tobacco Warehouses - journey in light and time”, with material from the

old Papastratos Τobacco Warehouses, is one more proof of the way Agrinio honours and

highlights the heritage of the Papastratos family to the oncoming generations. I am sure

this relationship will continue to exist with the same consistency and devotion.

O Xρίστος Σιμάτος γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1977. Σπούδασε στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών

Τεχνών της Αθήνας με υποτροφία του ελληνικού κράτους (Ι.Κ.Υ.), με δασκάλους τον Γιάννη

Ψυχοπαίδη, Μάριο Σπηλιόπουλο και Μανόλη Μπαμπούση (1997-2002). Παρακολούθησε μα-

θήματα ζωγραφικής και φωτογραφίας στο UCM Facultad Bellas Artes στη Μαδρίτη, με το πρό-

γραμμα Εrasmus (2000) με υποτροφία του (Ι.Κ.Υ.). Συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στο Μεταπτυχιακό

Εικαστικών Τεχνών της Ανωτάτης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών (2005-2007) με καθηγητές τον Τάσο

Χριστάκη και τον Μάριο Σπηλιόπουλο. Έχει παρουσιάσει το έργο του σε επτά ατομικές εκθέσεις

(2018 «Καπναποθήκες Παπαστράτου - πορεία στο φως και στον χρόνο», Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη

Αγρινίου | 2017 «Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring», Αίθουσα Τέχνης Αθηνών | 2017

«Τοπία», Ίδρυμα Λουκά & Ευάγγελου Μπελλώνια, Θήρα | 2015 «Βίνιανη» Δημοτική Πινακο-

θήκη Αγρινίου | 2014 «Σαντορίνη», Ίδρυμα Λουκά & Ευάγγελου Μπελλώνια, Θήρα | 2012

«Συν-Χρονίες», Αίθουσα Τέχνης Αθηνών | 2009 «Οικείο Ανοίκειο», Αίθουσα Τέχνης Αθηνών)

και έχει λάβει μέρος σε πολλές ομαδικές. Ειδικεύεται στη φωτογράφιση υψηλής και υπερυψηλής

ανάλυσης, στην πολυφασματική φωτογράφιση-Multispectral, στην αρχαιολογική φωτογραφία

καθώς και στη μακροφωτογραφία. Φωτογραφίζει έργα τέχνης, εικαστικές εγκαταστάσεις, αρ-

χιτεκτονικούς χώρους και πορτρέτα. Από το 2013 συνεργάζεται με το Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ερευνών

για τη φωτογράφιση επιγραφών των κλασικών και ελληνιστικών χρόνων στην περιοχή της Μα-

κεδονίας. Έχει φωτογραφίσει ευρήματα σε αρχαιολογικά μουσεία και αρχαιολογικούς χώρους.

Φωτογραφίες του έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε αρχαιολογικά βιβλία όπως: Τransformation Classical

Sculpture in Colour, 2014 / Μycenaean Wall Painting in Context, New Discoveries Old Finds

Reconsidered, 2015 / Eπιγραφές κάτω Μακεδονίας, Τεύχος Β’, 2015 / Μemories in Stone,

Figured Grave Reliefs from Aegean Thrace, 2017 κ.α. Το 2010 ιδρύει το δημιουργικό γραφείο

ps.design έχοντας την καλλιτεχνική επιμέλεια εντύπων, βιβλίων, καταλόγων Ελλήνων Εικαστικών

και Επιστημονικών Εκδόσεων. Έχει συνεργαστεί με το Μουσείο Μπενάκη, τις εκδόσεις Μέλισ-

σα, τις εκδόσεις Άγρα, το Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ερευνών, το Ταμείο Αρχαιολογικών Πόρων και Απαλ-

λωτριώσεων, το Ίδρυμα Αικατερίνης Λασκαρίδη, το Μπελλώνειο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο κ.α. στη

δημιουργία βιβλίων, καταλόγων και εποπτικού υλικού για εκθέσεις και συνέδρια. Παράλληλα

εργάζεται στο χώρο της εκπαίδευσης, διδάσκοντας φωτογραφία στο πρόγραμμα επιμόρφωσης

ενηλίκων στο Ελληνοαμερικάνικο Εκπαιδευτικό Ίδρυμα. Είναι μέλος του Εικαστικού Επιμελη-

τηρίου, του Εθνικού Κέντρου Φωτογραφίας και του Οργανισμού Πνευματικών Δικαιωμάτων.

Έργα του βρίσκονται σε δημόσιες συλλογές (Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη Αγρινίου, Ίδρυμα Λουκά &

Ευάγγελου Μπελλώνια, Μουσείο Μεγάρου Γκύζη) και σε ιδιωτικές συλλογές στην Ελλάδα και

στο εξωτερικό.

Christos Simatos was born in Athens in 1977. He has studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts

with professors Yiannis Psychopaidis, Marios Spiliopoulos and Manolis Babousis, with a schol-

arship from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (1997-2002). He has attended courses on

mus program (2000), with a scholarship from the GSSF. He has completed the Postgraduate

Course in Fine Arts of the A.S.F.A. (2005-2007) with professors Tasos Christakis and Marios

Spiliopoulos. He has presented his work in seven solo exhibitions (2018 “Papastratos Tobacco

Warehouses - journey in light and time”, Municipal Art Gallery of Agrinio | 2017 “Spring,

Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring”, Athens Art Gallery | 2017 “Landscapes”, Loukas & Evag-

“Syn-Chronies”, Athens Art Gallery, Greece | 2009 “Familiar-Unfamiliar”, Athens Art Gallery,

Greece) and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. He specializes in High-Definition

and Ultra-High-Definition photography, in multispectral photography, in archeological pho-

tography as well as macro photography. He photographs works of art, pictorial installations,

architectural sites and portraits. Since 2013 he has been collaborating with the National Hel-

lenic Research Foundation in photographing inscriptions of the Classical and Hellenistic period

in the region of Macedonia. He has photographed findings in several archeological museums

and sites. His photographs have been published in several books of archeology: Transformation

Classical Sculpture in Colour, 2014 / Μycenaean Wall Painting in Context, New Discoveries

Old Finds Reconsidered, 2015 / Inscriptions from Lower Macedonia, Vol.II, 2015 / Memories in

Stone, Figured Grave Reliefs from Aegean Thrace, 2017 etc. In 2010 he founds the ps.design

creative office, undertaking the artistic supervision of various prints, books and catalogs of

Greek pictorial artists and scientific publications. He has collaborated with the Benaki Muse-

um, Melissa Publishing House, Agra Publications, the National Hellenic Research Foundation,

the Fund of Archaelogical Proceeds, the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, the Bellonio Cultural

Center et al, in the creation of books, catalogs and visual material for exhibitions and con-

ferences. At the same time, he is employed in education, teaching photography in the Adult

Education Program of the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation. He is a member of the

Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece, the Hellenic Center for Photography and the Hellenic Cop-

yright Organization. Works of his can be found in public collections (Municipal Art Gallery of

Agrinio, Loukas & Evaggelos Bellonias Foundation, Gyzi Megaron Museum), as well as private

ones, in Greece and abroad.
