How to get there
From the port of Piraeus there aredaily departures of Ferry Boats and
Flying Dolphins to Aegina.
The Ferry Boats accept cars andthe trip lasts for 1 h. and 15 min.
By Flying Dolphinsthe trip lasts for 40 min.
Except than the vessels to the mainport of Aegina, there are also ships
during the summer period to the portof Souvala and the port of Agia
Marina

History
From The different findings in the areaof Kolona as well as other areas show
that the first inhabitants in Aeginaappeared in the second half of the4th millennium b.c. (3500-3000 b.c.).
From 734to 459 b.c. Aegina couldcompete with big cities in Mikra Asia
that were based on trade.Due to these comercial
transactions,in 650 B.C. the people ofAegina made their own silver coins,
“Turtle” or “Drachma”, the first Greekand European coin.

History
When the crusaders took overKonstantinoupolis (1204), Aegina was
given to the Venetians.
In 1537 A.D. the Turks declared waragainst Venice and the leader of the
Turkish fleet Barbarossa destroyedand burned Aegina.
Only a few churches in Palia Choramanaged to save.
The first Turkish domination lasted from1540 to 1687 A.D.
In 1828 it became the first capital ofGreece and Ioannis Kapodistrias was
the first governor

The temple of Apheais one of the preserved Doric temples,dating from the beginning of the 5th
B.C. century, built of local “poros”stone, and serving as a model for the
construction of the Parthenon andother temples in Greece, Asia Minor,(end of the 6th B.C. century). At the
foot of the hill lies the ArchaeologicalMuseum, which unique finds.

At the top of the hill of Kolona, there
was the temple of Apollo. It was built
around the 6th B.C. Century.
The temple was of rectangular shape
comprised by 11 pillars on the long
side and 6 pillars on the short.
Southern to the temple, Propylaia was
found, along with 2 other smaller
buildings.
At the bottom of Kolona lies the
Aegina’s Archaeological Museumcontains ancient remains and relics. It
was founded in 1832 by Ioannis
Kapodistrias. In the museum, there
are various vessels, pottery, ceramics,
alabaster, links, statues, signs, coins,
guns and coppery vessels.

The Government House is located
close to the Metropolis, in the centre
of the city. It is a very important to the
modern greek history building.

First Government by the first Governor
of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias

In the centre of Aegina there is the
Markellos’ Tower was built around
1800 by Spyros Markellos
a representative in the
Greek Parliament. In Markellos’ Tower
the first government was housed from
1816 until 1828 and for a short time
period the fund of the Hellenic state
was found there.

The Cathedral was also used as a
parliament house in 1827 and in 1828
for the first Greek goverment.
In the Cathedral, there are many
historic relics, a marble icon screen,
remarkable murals and icons.
In 1830, after a donation made by a
Swiss banker called Eunardios, the
Eunardios School of Teaching was
built next to the Cathedral which is a
neoclassic building.

The Municipal Theatre of Aegina usedas mutual teaching school .
Nowadays it is used by the MunicipalTheatre Company to regularly stage
plays and for a variety of culturalevents.

The Orphanage was initially built fromI. Kapodistrias to house and teachchildren orphaned by 1821 War of
Independence.It usually referred as a prison is
currently under the purview of Ministryof Culture which was undertaken to
restore it using European funds.

The Monastery of Saint Nektarios wasbuilt around 1904-1910 by the bishop
Pentapoleos Nektarios.Nektarios lived in the Monastery and
died in 1920.In 1961 he was declared a Saint.
The Monastery is on the road to SaintMarina and it's about 6 kilometersaway from the town of Aegina.
Close to the church isVirgin Mary Xrisoleontissa's Monastery
which was built in the early 17thcentury. It has high walls and it looksmore like a fort. It was built that waybecause the monks were afraid of
the pirates.
