  • ABSTRACT

    In this thesis a detailed presentation and analysis of the emerging wireless communication system Long Term Evolution (LTE) is provided. After an introduction to conventional cellular communications systems, such as the 1G and 2G, we examine the LTE architecture along with the adopted network elements, protocols and interfaces. Next, we describe the physical layer of LTE while 3 basic resource allocation algorithms are presented. Sequentially, for better understanding of the LTE architecture and physical layer, we illustrate the course of an LTE packet through all the entities of the network. Extensive reference is also made in one of the major features of LTE, the interoperability with other wireless standards. We also dedicate a chapter of our project to the LTE-Advanced system, the descendant of the LTE and the first under standardization 4G system, including the femtocells technology. Finally, for the practical verification of the knowledge reflected in our analysis, we conducted a virtual dimensioning of an LTE network in the city of Mytilene. In particular, we attempted to design an LTE network in the spectrum allocated to the telecommunication operator COSMOTE and examined various scenarios of quality of service (QoS) provided by the network.
