ΦΟΙΤΗΤΗΣ: Φράγκος Σωτήριος, ΑΕΜ 7629 ΘΕΜΑ: Οι πύργοι στην αρχαιότητα: χρήσεις, τυπολογία και συμβολισμός Ο πύργος είναι ένας τύπος κτιρίου που εμφανίζεται σχεδόν ανελλιπώς από τη στιγμή που η ανέγερση ψηλών κτιρίων καταστάθηκε εφικτή, και εξελίσσεται παράλληλα με τη τεχνογνωσία της ανθρωπότητας. Οι χρήσεις των πύργων υπήρξαν, και συνεχίζουν να είναι, πολλαπλές, και η θέση τους σημαντική στην αρχιτεκτονική παράδοση κάθε πολιτισμού που τους διέθετε. Σύμφωνα με τους Heinle και Leonhardt (1989), πύργος ορίζεται ως το κτίσμα εκείνο που διαθέτει ύψος πολλαπλάσιο του πλάτους του. 1  Εικόνα 1. Κανένας ορισμός του πύργου δεν είναι απόλυτα ξεκάθαρος. Ο πασίγνωστος μυθικός Πύργος της Βαβέλ δε πληρεί τα κριτήρια που δώθηκαν παραπάνω. Προάγγελος αυτής της σχεδόν αδιάκοπης συνύπαρξης των ανθρώπινων πολιτισμών με τους πύργους υπήρξε η σχέση των πρωτόγονων ανθρώπινων κοινωνιών με τις κορυφές των βουνών, των πύργωντης φύσης. Πράγματι, ανέκαθεν ο άνθρωπος απέδιδε, ασυνείδητα, θρησκευτική και πνευματική σημασία σε αυτές. Στη μινωική Κρήτη στις κορυφές των βουνών πραγματοποιούνταν οι θρησκευτικές τελετές. Η κατοικία του αρχαιοελληνικού δωδεκαθέου σίγουρα δεν εντοπίζονταν τυχαία στην κορυφή του Ολύμπου, του ψηλότερου ελληνικού βουνού. Ο χριστιανικός θεός φανερώθηκε στο Μωησή και του έδωσε τις δύο πλάκες που περιείχαν τις 10 εντολές στη κορυφή του όρους Σινά. Ακόμη και σήμερα, οι κορυφές των βουνών ασκούν την έλξη τους σε κάποιους ανθρώπους, οι οποίοι επιχειρούν να τις κατακτήσουν”, συχνά με κίνδυνο της ζωής τους.  1  βλ. Heinle, E., & Leonhardt, F.
