Landscape and Archaeology in Greece:

notes on a Misunderstood Relationship

Landscape archaeology started and developed mainly in the United King-

dom. It is considered to be a distinct branch of archaeological research, with a

particularly strong interpretative part. During the last fifteen years it has been

influenced by phenomenological approaches of other disciplines (geography,

social anthropology, architecture) with the aim of promoting human percep-

tion. In Greek prehistoric archaeology, relevant research has not advanced so

much. The word landscape is used in the analysis of environmental remains

and surface survey, albeit as an interpretitavely weak term, while it is lately sub-

stituted by the term regional survey. The present paper follows the develop-

ment of landscape research in Greece in comparison to international epistemo-

logical developments in the field and through indicative research examples.

Special emphasis is given to prehistoric archaeology and, particularly, Minoan

archaeology.
