Ωστόσο, πολύ συχνά, για τις μυστικές εταιρείες γράφουν και ομιλούν διάφορα πρόσωπα που είναι γνωσιολογικώς ανεπαρκή (αν όχι τελείως ανεφοδίαστα με τους απαραίτητους διανοητικούς/πληροφοριακούς πόρους για ένα τέτοιο εγχείρημα), φαντασιόπληκτα, ή και απλώς κυνικοί κερδοσκόποι εμπορικών εκδόσεων. Επίσης, υπάρχουν και εκείνοι που ασκούν σκόπιμη παραπληροφόρηση για να καλλιεργήσουν τις νεομυθολογίες που τους εξυπηρετούν και να προωθήσουν τα δικά τους συμφέροντα μέσω ανυπόστατων αφηγήσεων ή μέσω της τεχνικής της μισής αλήθειας. Πάντως, οι μυστικές αδελφότητες υπάρχουν και έχουν τη δική τους ιστορία, η οποία μπορεί και πρέπει να τύχει επιστημονικής διερευνήσεως. Η σημασία των ρευμάτων και των οργανώσεων του Δυτικού εσωτερισμού στην ιστορία της Δύσης έχει αναγνωριστεί επισήμως από την ακαδημαϊκή κοινότητα και αποτελεί αντικείμενο εξειδικευμένων σπουδών και ερευνών σε διάφορα πανεπιστήμια. Στην Αγγλία, το 2000, το Πανεπιστήμιο του Sheffield ίδρυσε εξειδικευμένο ερευνητικό κέντρο για τη μελέτη του Ελευθεροτεκτονισμού και των μυστικών Αδελφοτήτων. Πρόκειται για το Centre for Research into Freemasonry and Fraternalism. Το εν λόγω πανεπιστημιακό ερευνητικό κέντρο σε συνεργασία με τον εκδοτικό οίκο Equinox Publishers εξέδωσε το πρώτο επιστημονικό περιοδικό με αντικείμενο τον Ελευθεροτεκτονισμό και τις μυστικές Αδελφότητες: πρόκειται για το περιοδικό Journal for Research into Freemasonry and Fraternalism, το οποίο πρωτοκυκλοφορήθηκε το 2009 με διευθυντές σύνταξης τον δρα Andreas Önnerfors (Lund University και Malmö University College της Σουηδίας) και τον δρα Rob Collis (University of Sheffield, Αγγλία). Επίσης, το αντικείμενο του Δυτικού Εσωτερισμού (Western Esotericism) γενικά και ειδικώς η μελέτη του Ελευθεροτεκτονισμού, του Ροδοσταυρισμού, του Ερμητισμού, της Αλχημείας, των Ναϊτών, της Δυτικής Μαγείας, της Αστρολογίας, του Γνωστικισμού, της παραδοσιακής Καμπαλά κ.ο.κ. αποτελεί αντικείμενο σπουδών στο οποίο κάποιος μπορεί να αποκτήσει μεταπτυχιακό τίτλο Μάστερ ή ακόμη και Διδακτορικό σε διάφορα ευρωπαϊκά πανεπιστήμια, όπως το Πανεπιστήμιο Exeter στην Αγγλία (το οποίο προσφέρει MA και MPhil/PhD in Western Esotericism), το Πανεπιστήμιο του Άμστερνταμ στην Ολλανδία (University of Amsterdam), το Πανεπιστήμιο της Σορβώνης στη Γαλλία ( Sorbonne, École Pratique des Hautes Études, EPHE) κ.λπ.
