Ἔχουμε δύο πνεύματα: τὴν ψιλὴ (δεξὶ φεγγαράκι: ᾿ «ἐδῶ») καὶ τὴν δασεία (ἀριστερὸ φεγγαράκι: ῾ «ὁ»). Κάθε λέξη ποὺ ἀρχίζει μὲ φωνῆεν (α, ε, η, ι, ο, υ, ω) παίρνει ὁ πωσδήποτε πνεῦμα στὸ φωνῆεν αὐτό: «ἀπό, ἐγώ, ἡ, ἱστός, ὁ, ὑγεία, ὡς». Ἔχουμε δύο ἐξαιρέσεις στὸν κανόνα αὐτό:
