Enabling communications – key technologies of today and tomorrow

An open agenda during the last period on what will be the emerging broad band technologies.

There are various answers. Among these, three will be highlighted:

WiMAX LTE TETRA and TEDS.

Key Telecoms Trends

Fixed line usage is reducing dramatically for “classical” services (e.g. voice)

Mobile use is increasing steadily even though penetration is already high

Broadband Internet deployment shows a rapid growth trend

Why WiMAX ?

During the last years there has been a worldwide effort for bringing broadband

connectivity to everyone and everywhere. Under the umbrella of IEEE and the

WiMAX Forum, an industry consortium,  we have the development of 802.16

family of standards.

8902.16 comes to complement all gaps in broadband connectivity for fixed point

and portable/mobile applications, with extensive broadband wireless access in the

effort to link enterprises and every interested user to core telecommunication

networks.

WiMAX suits perfectly to areas with specific characteristics (rural areas, islands,

under development areas).

WiMAX will bring new and innovative services to end user.

What is WiMAX ?

WiMAX is based on the WMAN IEEE 802.16 group standards.

ITU Approved WiMAX as New IMT-2000 Standard (Oct. 2007)

Available standards IEEE 802.16 (Fixed LOS) IEEE 802.16-2004 (Fixed

NLOS) – or Fixed WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 (Fixed

and Mobile NLOS) – or Mobile WiMAX

Key WiMAX technologies are OFMDA, MIMO and IP Core

What is LTE ?

LTE stands for Long-Term Evolution within 3GPP focused on future upgrades to the 3G

standards to provide drastic improvement in wireless data speed.

The growing market for LTE

Ericsson estimates that there are now more than 600 million fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions

Increasing popularity of mobile broadband is driving demand for higher speeds in the fixed broadband world

Juniper Research analyses the total market for Mobile Web 2.0 to grow from USD 5.5 billion to USD 22.4 billion between 2008 and 2013

82% of people use internet everyday several times and 50% say that having high speed Internet available everywhere is important to them

The Future View to LTE based services – IMS based TV case

www.nettechn.com

Following 3GPPstandards, the coming generations of mobile terminals will host native Java-based IMS clients.

Integration with IMS-based IPTV, together with IMS-supported mobile terminals, will provide the possibility to transfer ongoing TV sessions from the TV in the home to a mobile deviceand vice versa.

Conclusions

In many technologies, despite the recession, we are whitnessing

increasing growth

There are emerging markets and market possibilities that can be

captured

even during these difficult times

Different technologies are suitable for different needs
