Κεκαυμένος, Το Κρυφό Σχολειό

Γιώργος Κεκαυμένος «Όποιος ελέγχει το παρελθόν, ελέγχει το μέλλον» Γεώργιος Όργουελ, 1984. Διονυσίου Καλλιάρχου, του τιθέντος την ψυχήν υπέρ των προβάτων, αιωνία η μνήμη. Είναι γνωστό ότι οι αναθεωρητές ιστορικοί θέλουν με κάθε θυσία να αποσυνδέσουν τελείως την εκκλησία από την επανάσταση του 1821, και συνακόλουθα, από όλα τα ιστορικά γεγονότα, στα οποία το σύγχρονο Ελληνικό κράτος χρωστάει την ύπαρξή και την ελευθερία του. Γι’ αυτό οτιδήποτε συνδέει τον Ελληνισμό με την ορθόδοξη χριστιανική πίστη χαρακτηρίζεται αυτόματα ως μύθος. Ένας από αυτούς τους «μύθους» είναι και το κρυφό σχολειό. Και μάλιστα όχι ένας της σειράς, αλλά ίσως ο κυριότερος. Ο μύθος. Είναι αλήθεια πως σχετικά με το κρυφό σχολειό είχα κάποια στιγμή κλονιστεί από τα λεγόμενα των αναθεωρητών ιστορικών, γιατί τα επιχειρήματά τους έμοιαζαν απόλυτα και αναντίρρητα και ο λόγος τους απέπνεε τέτοια σιγουριά και βεβαιότητα, που πραγματικά δεν άφηνε το παραμικρό περιθώριο αμφισβήτησης και αμφιβολίας. Από την άλλη, μου φαίνονταν πολύ «ύποπτη» και η συμπεριφορά των ιστορικών του πατριωτικού χώρου, τους οποίους έβλεπα, όταν γίνονταν λόγος για το κρυφό σχολειό, ή να μασάνε τα λόγια τους ή να χαμογελάνε «πονηρά» και με νόημα… Άλλωστε, ακόμη και ο παπα-Γιώργης Μεταλληνός, ο οποίος είναι γνωστός και για τις βαθιές ιστορικές του γνώσεις, ειδικά στο θέμα του κρυφού σχολειού είναι σαφής και στην τοποθέτησή του: Το θεωρεί ξεκάθαρα μύθο, διότι πιστεύει πως είναι «ατεκμηρίωτο ιστορικά ως προς τη διαθρυλούμενη μορφή του». Βέβαια, «θρύλος» αυτός, προσθέτει, «έχει οπωσδήποτε υπόσταση», αλλά «με την έννοια ότι την οργανωμένη παιδεία, αδύνατη για την εποχή αυτή, αναπλήρωνε η ανεπίσημη και ταπεινή φροντίδα της εκκλησίας, στους νάρθηκες των ναών και στις μονές. Τίποτε όμως δεν αποδεικνύει επίσημα καθιερωμένη και συστηματική δίωξη της παιδείας από τους Τούρκους »[1] . Και για τα περαιτέρω παραπέμπει στην «σπουδαία ανάλυση του Άλκη Αγγέλου στην Ιστορία του Ελληνικού Έθνους»[2] . Δηλαδή, ο παπα-Γιώργης αναπαράγει εδώ τον σκληρό πυρήνα της αναθεωρητικής επιχειρηματολογίας για την απόρριψη του κρυφού σχολειού, μια επιχειρηματολογία που θα δούμε σε όλες της τις λεπτομέρειες αμέσως παρακάτω. Καθώς όμως συνέχιζα να ασχολούμαι με το θέμα και να «ψάχνομαι» σχετικά, ήρθε σε γνώση μου μια παράγραφος από την ιστορία του ’21, του μεγάλου μας ιστορικού Διονύση Κόκκινου, ο οποίος λέει εκεί επί λέξει τα εξής: «Ο παπάς κάτω από τα ράκη του ράσου του κρατεί το ψαλτήρι και πηγαίνει να μάθη τα παιδιά, που τον περιμένουν, να διαβάζουν. Ομιλεί ακόμη εις τα παιδιά και δια τους μεγάλους ανθρώπους που εδόξασαν άλλοτε αυτόν τον τόπον. Διδάσκει την ολίγην ιστορίαν που γνωρίζει και αυτός. Το κρυφό σχολειό δεν είναι θρύλος . Το συνετήρησε παρά τας διώξεις, παρά την αξιοθρήνητον έλλειψιν παντός μέσου, παρά την φοβεράν πίεσι τόσων αμέσων αναγκών που θα ήτο φυσικόν να οδηγήσουν προς τον εξισλαμισμόν, ο βαθύτατος πόθος του τυραννουμένου έθνους να υπάρξη»[3] . Η διαβεβαίωση αυτή του Δ. Κόκκινου, πως «το κρυφό σχολειό δεν είναι θρύλος», γυρόφερνε συνέχεια στο μυαλό μου και δε μ’ άφηνε στιγμή να ησυχάσω και να πιστέψω έτσι ήσυχα κι απλά τα επιστημονικά θέσφατα των αναθεωρητών ιστορικών, αλλά και εκείνων του πατριωτικού ρεύματος. Και αυτό γιατί ήξερα και ξέρω τι σημαίνει Δ. Κόκκινος για τα θέματα της τουρκοκρατίας και του 1821: Η σχεδόν μοναδική και απόλυτη αυθεντία, μιας και ήταν ο μόνος ίσως άνθρωπος που γνώριζε αυτήν την εποχή τόσο καλά και σε τέτοιο βάθος. Από τότε αποφάσισα να ψάξω το θέμα του κρυφού σχολειού όσο λεπτομερέστερα και πιο αναλυτικά μπορούσα. Για να καταλάβω από πού αντλούσε ο Κόκκινος τούτη δω την βεβαιότητά του. Αλλά, όταν αποφασίζεις να ασχοληθείς με ένα τόσο αμφιλεγόμενο και δύσκολο θέμα, είσαι υποχρεωμένος να διεξέλθεις όλες τις σχετικές με το θέμα σου απόψεις. Και όχι μόνον αυτό, αλλά πρέπει επιπλέον να τις αναλύσεις, να τις αξιολογήσεις και φυσικά, πρώτ’ απ’ όλα, να αναζητήσεις και να παραθέσεις όλες τις υπάρχουσες πηγές. Μια τέτοια δουλειά δεν είναι δυνατόν να εξαντληθεί στα ασφυχτικά όρια μιας μικρής και συνοπτικής εργασίας. Αντίθετα, απαιτούνται δεκάδες σελίδες με τα παραθέματα από τις πηγές, την βιβλιογραφία και με την σχετική ανάλυση. Έτσι προέκυψε αυτή εδώ η μελέτη, η οποία απευθύνεται σε όλους εκείνους που θέλουν πραγματικά να μάθουν ποια είναι η ιστορική αλήθεια για το κρυφό σχολειό, ένα ιδιαίτερα δύσκολο και περίπλοκο θέμα. Γι’ αυτό και όσοι θα μπουν στον κόπο να την διαβάσουν, δεν θα πρέπει να υπολογίσουν ούτε τον κόπο που θα χρειαστεί να καταβάλουν, ούτε τις πολλές (ηλεκτρονικές!) σελίδες που θα πρέπει να διαβάσουν, όσο κι αν κάτι τέτοιο τους φανεί ιδιαίτερα βαρετό ή κουραστικό . Γιατί, δυστυχώς, ούτε για την ιστορία υπάρχει βασιλική οδός… Άλλωστε, οι αναθεωρητές ιστορικοί όλους εμάς που υπερασπιζόμαστε τον «μύθο» του κρυφού σχολειού μας έχουν ψέξει, με το δίκιο τους, για «πολλαπλές και μικρές σε έκταση δημοσιεύσεις»[4] . Ήρθε λοιπόν η ώρα μια και καλή να τους διαψεύσουμε. Το κρυφό σχολειό στην σύγχρονη έρευνα.

Even during times of great political distress such as the Ottoman rule or the Nazi occupation of Greece
during the Second World War, participation in some form of official or unofficial literacy practices provided Greeks with a sense of direction and pride, a form of moral sustenance. For instance, the "secret schools," which operated clandestinely and "illegally" during the Ottoman rule over Greece for nearly 400 years, also instilled in them a strong Greek ethos.
