58th OPEN EUROPEAN LIGHTNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Yacht Club of Greece (YCG), along with Nautical Athletic Club of Voula (NACV), organized the 58th Open European Lightning Championships during the week of 13-18 July 2014 at the facilities of NACV in Voula. The Lightning is a 5.8m open boat that was originally designed by Olin Stephens in 1938, and has always held an important role in Greek sailing having launched the careers of many legendary Greek sailors. The 58th European Championships were run under the auspices of the International Lightning Class Association (ILCA), taking advantage of the 2 existing fleets of Lightning boats at YCG (Parthenon 286 Fleet) and NACV (Fleet 525). ILCA was represented by the Class Secretary Mrs. Laura Jeffers, and ISAF was represented by its Vice President, and old Lightning sailor, Mr. George Andreadis. There were 23 teams participating, including numerous international teams from Finland, Italy and Australia, crewed by well-known Lightning sailors such as S. Salminen, D. Sepiacci, I. Edwards, K. Aromma, T. Boudouris, Th. Tsoulfas and many others. The Championship week started with boat measurements and a practice race, and was followed by six challenging round-the-buoys races in the beautiful bay of Voula, with many changes in the lead. The weather conditions were quite diverse ranging from strong northerlies in the first days to light day-winds towards the end of the week. A number of receptions were held for the crews, committees, judges and other officials, the highlight being a moonlit dinner at the magnificent YCG veranda, and the award ceremony at the NACV premises.T h e 5 8 t h O p e n E u r o p e a n L i g h t n i n g Championships were a good example of how intra-club cooperation can lead to a successful international event. Of course the sponsors of the event, Salty Bag, supported by Ondeck magazine, Primo, Papaspirou, Darema Winery Lalizas & GWC were also key ingredients to the success of the event, and we are thankful for their support.

Yacht Club of Greece is sistered with a number of important international yacht clubs, which we present to our members. In this issue we present the Yacht Club Italiano, which is the oldest sailing club in the Mediterranean. YCIs history started in 1879 when Vittorio Augusto Vecchi (known as Jack la Bolina) and a group of enthusiastic sailors, including King Umberto I, founded the Royal Yacht Club Italiano.

The Yacht Club Italiano focuses on the promotion of yachting, organization of national and international regattas and the education of young sailors. Every year the YCI organizes numerous important races such as the Giraglia Rolex Cup, Coppa Carlo Negri, Millevele, Siad Trophy, MBAs Cup, Portofino Rolex Trophy.

Yacht Club Italiano is currently chaired by Carlo Croce (also President of ISAF) and has approximately 1.100 members and 270

yachts. The head office of the Yacht Club Italiano is at the Duca degli Abruzzi Marina in Genoa, has a splendid collection of marine and yachting related artwork, and includes various facilities to accommodate members including a yachting themed restaurant, bar, a very significant marine library, and rooms for conferences and private receptions. Adjoining the main building is the Nautical Base which provides YCI Members with mooring, launching and haulage facilities.

Antarctica is the worlds coldest, windiest, and most remote region.

Last January a team of Yacht Club of Greece sailors (M. Stasinopoulos, D. Tsallis & C. Stratos), along with friends, set-off on a sailing expedition to cross from Cape Horn to Antarctica, and explore the Antarctic Peninsula. To explore this wild region we chartered s/y Vaihere, a 24 meter steel schooner specialised for travel in extreme regions. We started from Ushuaia in Argentina which, at 55 degrees south, is the southernmost city in the

world, and sits in the middle of the majestic Beagle Channel, surrounded by a beautiful alpine scenery of sea and snow covered mountains. We started sailing through the Beagle Channel, into the infamous Southern Ocean, across the 550 mile Drake Passage, and reached the Palmer Archipelago, at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula after four and a half sailing days. Sailing past the Cape Horn and crossing these latitudes, which are famous for offering extreme sailing conditions (furious fifties and screaming sixties), was meant to be a challenge. We were more fortunate, and made the passage in crispy cold weather, medium to light winds, and right on schedule. Once there, we spent 2 weeks exploring the numerous islands, dodging growlers and icebergs, and edging our way through ice-blocked passages. We were constantly surrounded by massive ice-covered mountains and glaciers that reached

into the sea, and felt like we were on another planet. Our most usual encounters were schools of penguins and lazy seals, as well as a close encounter with a vicious looking leopard seal. Humpback whales were frequently cruising right next to our boat, and we were even able to swim with them, amply amortising our special dry suits (water temperature at -1 degrees Celsius). The more adventurous members of our team decided to try a worldwide first, and went kitesurfing surrounded by ice, as well as explored the underwater world in scuba diving missions. As this is the summer season there, and conditions are more benign, we also met a few other adventurers exploring the area, as well as a few scientists who were manning weather and research bases.After 2 amazing weeks we headed north again, and after another uneventful crossing, made it to Cape Horn.The captain says we must be the only Greeks to have sailed so close to the Horn, and lived to talk about it. It is indeed the most impressive Rock we have ever seen, very black, and fearsome (apparently more than 20,000 sailors have drowned there over the centuries). Overall this was a trip of a lifetime, we saw another world, where humans have no role, and the enormity and power of nature is still in full display.
