Dear Friends,

The summer of 2015 and the events of the Cultural Associations of the region start and is going to give us authentic

images and flavors and scents from the unique province of Kissamos.

The E.PO.F.E.K for the third consecutive year prepared the centralized cultural events brochure of our province.

The purpose of this effort is the promotion and enhancement of remarkable cultural work of all the Associations of the

province Kissamos. The Cultural Associations, active and with a deep love for tradition, history and culture of Kissamos,

is ready to offer you memorable moments.

We invite you, therefore, and we welcome you in Kissamos of Culture, Nature and Hospitality encouraging you to

discover and enjoy our local culture and our eternal values and traditions.

We would like to thank the Holy Metropolis of Kissamos & Selino, the Region of Crete, the Municipality of

Kissamos, the Municipality of Platanias, the Public Benefit Corporation of the Municipality of Kissamos, the Public

Benefit Corporation of the Municipality of Platanias, the Sponsors, the New Commercial Association, the Educational

Community and the cultural associations of our province for the harmonious cooperation and for their financial and

With great pleasure and high expectations the Municipality of Platanias welcomed the efforts of EPOFEK for registration

and promotion of the cultural heritage of Kissamos. A separate and special province, with a significant contribution to the

tradition and culture of our country. The current action of the Union, with stable and coordinated actions, highlights the

specific difference of Kissamos as a province but also strengthens the dialogue and exchange of views between cultural and

local associations on a broader level, confirming our expectations. As Municipal Authority of Platanias we pay special

attention to promote the cultural characteristics of our country and, through the excellent cooperation with the Cultural

Associations, we strengthen our actions and initiatives in this direction, as best we can. In ths context we participate and

support the work of EPOFEK. with the signature of a joint cooperation strategy for the study of culture and the specificity of

Kissamos, aiming not only at rescuing of the history and traditions of ours but also passing them down from generation to

generation.

During a period of social and economic crisis like the present, culture is an oasis of optimism and hope shelter. The

cultural proposal that coordinates -for another year- the EPOFEK and which includes a number of events throughout our

municipality gives the stimulus and the opportunity to each of us to enjoy this summer a unique and entertaining journey into

world of art, culture and folk tradition, with the care and passion of the cultural associations of Kissamos.

The Municipality Kissamos supports every effort to promote and promotion of our cultural tradition and heritage and

therefore congratulates the organizers for this year's proposal and wish all a pleasant and creative cultural summer, by

Dear Friends,

Crete, our island is a unique crossroad of cultures which for centuries compose a unique cultural environment in Europe

and the Mediterranean. For the Region of Crete is a priority to continuously upgrade and support all these initiatives which

contribute towards the enhancement of our culture through the organization of events by local associations. Cultural events

shape customs, habits while enabling creative expression to the new generation, creating conditions for development and

progress. We warmly congratulate the Union of Cultural Associations of the Province of Kissamoson organization cultural

events for summer 2015, and all event organizers, the participating artists in the certainty that it will offer a remarkable result

for the residents and visitors of Kissamos. I wish everyone a good summer!

The province of Kissamos is one of the five provinces, in which the Chania prefecture was divided administratively until the implementation of the

Plan Kapodistrias (1997). Registered province was Kissamos (Kastelli Kissamos), a small seaside town on the north coast of the county. The province

occupied the northwestern part of the prefecture of Chania and its boundaries included the following former municipalities: Municipality of Voukolies,

Municipality of Inachorio, Municipality of Kissamos Municipality of Kolymvari and Municipality of Mithimna. There are several gorges in the area:

Vavouledo - Trachinos, Mesaulia - Deliana, Malathyros, Rokka, Pateriana, Sirikari, Topolia, Campos and Kalogeros. The northern and western side of the

area is dominated by impressive beaches of Tavronitis, Kolympari, bay of Kissamos, Balos, Falassarna, Sfinari and Elafonisi.

The history of Kissamos is lost in the depths of centuries and is directly linked to the history of Chania and the whole of Crete. Throughout the

historical course, Kissamos develops rich commercial and economic activities. Its geographical location adds to this: Seaside location, with fertile soils

in the northern and northwestern part, the western gate of Crete. Many enemies conspire against Kissamos for its geographical position (Achaeans,

Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Turks) and conflicts erupt often with the aim of conquest. During Greek Antiquity (up to 69 AD), western Crete has a key

role and significant settlement activity. Ancient authors report more than 40 cities in the region, among which are included the following, which

geographically belong to the province of Kissamos: Inachorion, Falassarna Korykon, Agneion, Etea or Elea, Kissamos, Mithymna, Polyrrinia Rokka,

Diktynnaion.

Kisamitiki C DIET is depended on local production, local flora with the famous pharmaceutical and dietary value and the Christian

education. The Kissamos cuisine is rich in variety and content, both in food and in pastries. Firstly, olive oil, legumes, vegetables and herbs of the area.

Dairy products, fresh fish, meat (sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits) in free range, local pasta and sweets create unique flavors.

The manners and customs of the residents are based on tradition and they are expressed through lifestyle, cultural and religious events. The

Chaniotikos syrtos or syrtos is the most widespread dance of Crete. The first instrumental performance of the music of the dance is attributed to the

Kissamos violin player, Stefanos Triantafyllakis or Kioros from Galouva Lousakies the first choreography by people from Kissamos presented in the

settlement Pateriana of the community of Loussakies, approximately in 1750.
