Last year, just in time for the European Parliamentary election in June, Green Party MP George Perdikis succeeded in having Parliament pass the legislation needed to upgrade the Cyprus electoral law to comply with EU Directives. As is often the case in Cyprus, however, that was not the end of the story. There was still action needed to change the legislation for municipal and community elections. Readers may recall previous articles about the problems concerning the need for non-Cypriots to present a Cyprus identity card when registering to vote. Following a complaint by a Cyprus resident, the European Commission, in January 2009, con rmed that this requirement imposed on EU citizens residing in Cyprus “is contrary to Community law.” The Greens did not forget about this and have triumphed again recently in changing this legislation which will make EU citizen voter registration for Municipal and Community elections simpler and easier. The law has also changed the minimum age of candidates to 21 (instead of 25). To register to vote in local elections now EU citizens need only to complete the application form and to present Cyprus Immigration papers (the “yellow slip”) to prove they are legally resident in Cyprus. The next local election The next Municipal and Community elections are in December 2011, 18 months away. As in the last local elections in 2006, EU citizens resident in Cyprus have the right to vote and to run as candidates. Political parties are already well engaged and focused on this. As more and more foreign residents register to vote, the political “dinosaurs” are watching closely. Keeping this in mind, it may be possible to disrupt the usual backroom deals of the political boys, if there are enough new EU voters. This is how I was elected in Pegeia, with the newly-formed Coalition of Independents, backed by the Green Party. In 2006, we took the dinosaurs by surprise and made history in Pegeia by electing the rst foreign-born person to the Council. This time around, let’s encourage even more EU residents to exercise their democratic rights and to have a say in their communities. Think about doing the same thing we did in Pegeia. Communities can support Green candidates for Councils and even create their own Coalition of Independents. In communities with large numbers of foreign residents, who generally are not aligned with Cyprus political parties, there is potential to shift the balance of power and to change how local councils function. In Cyprus, every vote really does count and we can make a difference.Generally, just before elections, all of the political parties talk of the environment but their interest disappears microseconds after the last vote is cast. Their failed policies and weak solutions amply demonstrate this (to name a few: golf course handouts to developers, uncontrolled and unsustainable development, the Paphos-Polis road, the water policy asco, indifference to the epidemic poisoning of animals). One thing is sure: if we opt out and don’t try, then there won’t be change from the old dinosaur ways. That’s why we need all of our readers to spread the word to their friends that they have the right to vote in local elections and that the Greens provide a real option for real change.Above all, we need change. The Greens are a real voice for the people and for the planet.Voter registration forms for both the Municipal and the European Parliamentary electoral rolls can be found at District Of ces and Citizen Advice Bureaus in all towns. They can also be downloaded from the Pegeia Coalition of Independents website (www.pegeiacoalition.org) and from the Green Party website (www.cyprusgreens.org).

Partly, of course, it’s the Lycra. Actually it’s almost always the Lycra! But it’s also a state of mind, a tendency to smell like stale cheddar at one’s desk and a useful shorthand to know whom to avoid at parties. I am not a cyclist. But I do cycle to work every now and again, well, actually every day, and especially when I can remember where I left my bike. And then, I have always wondered how healthy I was being – and whether there were ways to do it better. Greg Chapman, a personal trainer based in Kensington Gardens, West London has tried to nd out. “Cycling is great for you. It works out your quads, your glutes and your hamstrings

– essentially, your entire lower body. As a low-impact form of exercise, it is particularly effective for those with knee, ankle or hip problems. “Clients who can’t run for an hour can often cycle for an hour,” advises Greg. That I would have to agree with. I have to put my tracksuit on to run a bath! My route to work is more like 10.52 minutes (not that I’ve ever timed it, you understand, or tried to beat my personal best…much!). But there is still plenty you can do in a short period of time to get the most out of the exercise. Interval training – alternating short sprints with longer, gentler periods – is almost as effective on a bike as on a running machine. “But be smart about it,” recommends Greg. “Burn uphill and power off downhill.” Or, if you’re like me, freewheel downhill, whilst you wait for your lungs to catch you up at the rst set of red lights. And if you’re worried about sweating at work, or can’t have a shower, take it easy on the way in, and push it harder on the way home.” However fast you plan on pedaling, it’s always worth thinking about posture: chest out, head up, arms slightly bent, back straight but not arched, leading knee at an angle of 90 degrees. If you think about keeping your core muscles slightly tensed, everything else ts into place. It also gives your abs something of a workout. And if that seems like a lot to think about – whoever came up with the phrase “as easy as riding a bike?” – There’s also the question of minimising power loss. As I tackle a small hill, standing on the pedals and jerking from side to side. I try again, concentrating on driving power through the pedals and keeping the bike stable. After six or so weeks of regular cycling, one’s body apparently comes to a plateau: to get tter you have to up the ante, cycling further and faster. You’re also unlikely to burn as many calories as you would while running. One study found that 20 miles ridden at 10mph is equivalent to only 4.8 miles of running. The good news, however, is that cycling is an excellent way of maintaining a base level of tness. More importantly, according to Greg, “cycling is great for the mind”. And as I meander happily through the park to work, it’s dif cult not to agree. It’s also an excellent excuse for a second breakfast once you get to the of ce. Cycling Cyprus sets off from Nicosia on 01 October 2010 on their 500km trip around Cyprus raising money for the special baby unit and cardiology unit of the General Hospital and The Friends’ of The Paphos Hospice, and would like to thank Shadeports Plus, www.shadeportsplus.com , Q Water Cyprus, www.qwatercyprus.com , and Track and Talk, www.trackandtalk.com for their invaluable support.

After Turkey initiated the process of building a nuclear station for electric power in Akkuyu, right across our island’s northern shore, Egypt also seems to be aiming at the construction of a similar nuclear station in El Damba, west of Alexandria. If Cyprus does not react urgently and effectively, we will nd ourselves surrounded by nuclear stations of incredibly close proximity The fact that a majority of states in the Eastern Mediterranean region is turning to nuclear energy is not at all isolated from the political tension characterizing our region and the entire Middle East for centuries. The image of a Mediterranean free of nuclear proliferation as envisioned fty years ago by Egypt’s historic leader, Nasser, seems to be more and more unrealistic due to the promotion of current political interests. The Government of Cyprus shows unwillingness to deal more directly with the matter, and has not approached any of the neighboring nations, or accused Turkey for constructing its nuclear station in a volatile region of frequent earthquakes and terrorist activity.

The Green Party expresses its support towards the people of our neighboring country, Israel. It is with shock and sadness that we witness the great natural and human catastrophe which has hitting Israel. The destruction of the Haifa forest, a bio-diverse place with great ecological im-portance, and the loss of so many lives, makes up a tragic event, which cannot pass unnoticed. We commend the Cyprus Government for immediately responding to Israel’s call of help. This catastrophe must activate the peoples and governments of the region. The global climate changes, are transforming the area of the eastern Mediterranean into a hot inferno. Serious and criti-cal decisions must be taken. The climate is changing due to human activities, and along with that, our world is changing. It is required of the countries of the region to cooperate in order to deal with the climatic changes, asking for implementation of binding international decisions for the curbing of environmental pollution. The Cancun Conference in Mexico, which is already in progress, should be evaluated by the countries in our region (i.e. Cyprus, Israel, etc.) so that the big industrious countries adopt catalytic decisions. In addition, the need for the development of a common strategy in dealing with res in the region of the eastern Mediterranean, and the creation of a common re brigade is vital.

Are we trying to live a Greener life? Are we really? We may refuse plastic bags at supermarkets and equip ourselves with reusable shopping bags. We may drive an energy-ef cient car and reduce our air travel. We may recycle every single drop of water in our homes. We can refuse to buy personal care products that use harmful ingredients, even though it means painstakingly scrutinising each label. We may buy organic food to the degree that we can afford to, given the fact that it is often about four times the cost of the conventional product. All well and good, but if we still insist on eating meat… we are just like the ostrich with its head stuck in the ground, refusing to listen, refusing to see.Geophysicists Gidon Eshel and Pamela Martin from the University of Chicago concluded that changing one’s eating habits to a vegetarian diet does more to ght global warming than switching from a gas-guzzling SUV to a fuel-ef cient hybrid car. It has been said that “where the environment is concerned, eating meat is like driving a huge SUV.... Eating a vegetarian diet is like driving a mid-sized car. And eating a vegan diet (no dairy, no eggs) is like riding a bicycle or walking. Shifting away from SUVs and SUV-style diets, to much more energy-ef cient alternatives, is key to ghting global warming.Consider that two kilos of wheat can be grown with 60 litres of water, whereas a kilo of meat requires 2,500 to 6,000 litres.

Paul McCartney noted, “If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That’s the single most important thing you could do.” As we know, eating animals simultaneously contributes to a multitude of tragedies: the animals’ suffering and death; the ill-health and early death of people; the unsustainable overuse of oil, water, land, topsoil, grain, labour and other vital resources; environmental destruction, including deforestation, species extinction, mono-cropping and global warming; the legitimacy of force and violence; the mis-allocation of capital, skills, land and other assets; vast inef ciencies in the economy; tremendous waste; massive inequalities in the world; the continuation of world hunger and mass starvation; the transmission and spread of dangerous diseases; and moral failure in so-called civilized societies. Vegetarianism is an antidote to all of these unnecessary tragedies. Just think about the latest epidemic of swine u. What did the Pink Floyd song say? HEY! Leave those pigs alone! (Something to sing next time we’re at the supermarket, as we hurry with a shudder past the smelly dead esh counter and the sound of chopping.)
